Do some research again. Most projects have team leader and he decides what patches are applied to his source tree. Just like Linus does with the linux kernel. If a patch comes in and he doesnt like it, he doesnt put it in. If he does like the idea, but not the implimentation he might rewrite it his own way. Now say you dont like the team leader or whatever, you can then start you own version of the product and use all their source code too.
