I see it's more than time to make a statement on what's up
with Netalive.org. Please note that I'm NOT refering to the
sites hosted on Netalive.org, but only to the page that appears
on your browser when you're heading for http://www.netalive.org/
It's a rather long story, so...
Sometime last year Netalive.org started as a quite vague idea of
combining the support of interesting projects with the fight against
commercialism. However, this turned out to be a love-it-or-hate-it
idea. There were a lot of very active and enthusiastic users on this
page (you know who is meant by this, thanks, thanks, thanks!) BUT
there just were not enough visitors to get this type of page running.
So Netalive.org was shut down for a TOTAL reconception. Total meant
kicking out everything but possibly the color sheme and make a page
that has nothing to do with the old one.
A mailing list was formed to discuss it, I think subscribers were
Weasel, Martin "kk", Draggie from nexus.org.nz and me. After some
discussion we developed the idea of a general interest web
community. A kind of Coder's Guild, just with discussion boards
about lots of topics rather than one mailing list about programming
only, and several other goodies.
The coding was there to be done first so I started the work on
the until today largest web project I've ever been doing.
At this moment I had to find out how hard events from the outside
world can hit a project like this. First of Martin barely esaped
death twice in a row and *really* had other worries than projects
like this. Then an event in my life struck me with quite a broad
grinning, with the side effect that now I too had (often still have)
other things hammering in my head. My will for active online
activities virtually died at that time.
The project lied on ice for quite a time and the release date
"December 98" proved all but keepable. I believe this was when we
had that discussion on this list, about a server for Netalive.org.
As a result Weasel asked the university of Salzburg if we could
put up a server there. It would have been a lottery win with
investments approaching zero, but we were VERY positive about
this, then.
The millstones of bureaucrazy made a terrific performance. It took
them I think somewhat over three months to come up with a reply
the content of which could be taken back to "sorry, no.".
Now we finally seem to have found a home for Netalive.org, a
friend of Weasel will put up a server in his house and we will
link ourselves in there. The server's installation is planned
for the 29th of April this year.
So if the heavens don't fall down again or something similiar, I
hope that the new site will hopefully be open for beta testing
in the beginning of May.
So Frank, you had to ask :)
so long,
Henning
