Don't forget about FreeBSD which is another great Unix that free and
has all the stuff a Linux would have and most like Solaris would have.

In my opinion Unix and Unix like OS's are the premier OS for programmers
and
hobbyists since all the development tools come standard. It also helps
if your wallet is small like mine, I can't afford $500 dollars for
Visual C++ 6. So even if Microsoft was as good as everyone thinks. I
still would be on a free OS since MS tools cost so much.
