MCSE or equivalent courses - are they worthwhile?

Posted by Benjamin Johnston on 1999-04-19

Hi,
I hope some people here have obtained (or are currently studying for) MCSE
(or equivalent Novell or otherwise) qualifications.

I've just started first year university, but am fairly dissatisfied by my
current lack of formal qualifications (since everything I know about
computers has being self taught). What I have in mind is something that
would be enjoyable, but also will pay for itself (and open up interesting
possiblities for holiday/vacation work).

Someone suggested MCSE - claiming that it can be completed during a holiday
break, and is essentially "money in the bank" - instantly opening up well
paid part-time work for holiday breaks (and even weekends) - apparantly.

So, I began to wonder....
-How much would I expect the course to cost all up?
-Are they fairly difficult - what time frame does it involve?
-What prerequisite knowledge/qualifications would you recommend?
-What sort of people would be suited to such a course?
-Are they worth the time and money?
-Is holiday/part-time work for MSCE (or equivalent) readily available
(especially in Brisbane, Australia)?
-How do MCSE, CNE (or Novell's is called) and similar
qualifications compare?
-Is it common for a business to sponsor the course, in some sort of contract
where it is paid for after passing, by some sort of employment (or any other
scheme)? - I could probably convince a parent/relative to pay/loan, but an
agreement might be more ideal.
-What happens when the next version of NT comes out?
-do I do an upgrade course (how much)?
-or do I have to start again from scratch?

Can anyone here answer any of these questions, or maybe have had bad or good
experiences that might be usefull to know about.

Or maybe someone knows of a completely different alternative that they've
had a good experience with.

Thanks in advance,
Benjamin Johnston
