Coder's Guild Mailing List

Using the Coder's Guild Mailing List

Posted by Weasel on 1998-02-15

Hi Coder's Guild Members!
=========================

Since a lot of you have difficulties editing their settings in the
mailing list, I now want to send to you an instructions file Jaz, the
Coder's Guild founder, wrote for this list. This file is send
automatically to all new subscribers but if you are not that new in the
guild and in the list, you might have never get something like this.

Most people have problems changing their address so I just want to give
a short example:

You are subscribed with the address member@the.coders.guild
Your password is DGL.
and you want your address changed to member@xxxx.xxx

so you have to send a mail to listserver@xxxx.xx.xx from the address you
are currently subscribed with, i.e. member@the.coders.guild. It is
important that you send it from this address!! In this mail, leave the
subject empty and in the body just write the line

set tcg address PASSWORD NEW_ADDRESS

where you replace the words in capitals with the items that match with
your data. In or case:

set tcg address DGL. member@xxxx.xxx

Do _NOT_ replace >address< with your current address:

set tcg member@the.coders.guild DGL. member@xxxx.xxx

this will _NOT_ work.

For more information about this see point 6 in jaz' file.

| 2. WhAt iS A MAiLiNG LiSt?
*------------------------------------------------------
A mailing list is a list of e-mail addresses, united to
one address, in our case tcg@xxxx.xx.xx. The e-mail
addresses of nearly all members are on this list. If
you send a mail to tcg@xxxx.xx.xx your mail will be
spread to all subscribers of the list, or say to nearly
all members. We use the list for example to ask
questions about programming, to look for beta testers,
to announce our self-written software, to form teams
and so on. You must be a member of the guild to use the
list. Membership is free, you can get a member at
http://www.paracatz.com/codersguild/

There are also "server commands" with that you can
control the settings for your current list entry.
All mails you must sent to listserver@xxxx.xx.xx are
server commands.

If you spread mails through the list you can use every
address you want. However, if you use a server command
you MUST use the address under which you are
subscribed. You can look up the address under which
you are subscribed in the Coder's Guild's member list
at http://www.paracatz.com/codersguild/

If the address you are subscribed under in the list is
only a forwarding address you have a little problem
since you can't send mails from a forwarding address
and so you can't use server commands. If your situation
is like that, send a mail to Weasel
(eeasel@xxxxxxx.xxx) and ask him to change your
e-mail address.

*------------------------------------------------------
| 4. AddiNG / REMOViNG YOUR AddRESS tO / fROM thE LiSt
*------------------------------------------------------
When you join your address will be added automatically
to the mailing list so you don't have to care about
anything. If you really want to remove your address
from the list write a mail to listserver@xxxx.xx.xx
with this text in the first message line:

signoff tcg

Of course you can subscribe to the list again by
sending a mail to listserver@xxxx.xx.xx with this text
in the first message line:

subscribe tcg YOUR_CODERSGUILD_MEMBERNAME

*------------------------------------------------------
| 5. CHANGiNG hOW MESSAGES ARE SENt tO YOU
*------------------------------------------------------
There are three modes with that you can change the
way of how the messages are sent to you. If you want
to change the mode sent a message to
listserver@xxxx.xx.xx with the command of the mode in
the first message line:

set tcg mail ack
You will get immediately every mail sent to
tcg@xxxx.xx.xx

set tcg mail noack
The same as "ack" but you won't get the messages you
posted.

set tcg mail digest
This is the default mode. All messages going to
tcg@xxxx.xx.xx are collected and sent to you in ONE
large mail at the end of the day.

set tcg mail postpone
You will get no mails any more until you change your
mode to ack, noack or digest

*------------------------------------------------------
| 6. EditiNG YOUR ACCOUNt SEttiNGS
*------------------------------------------------------
To use another address when using server commands
write a mail to listserver@xxxx.xx.xx with this text in
the first message line:

set tCG address YOURPASSWORD NEWADDRESS

Replace "YOURPASSWORD" with the password that was sent
to you when you joined the guild and "NEWADDRESS" with
your new e-mail address. Do not replace the 3rd word,
"address"!

To change your password write a mail to
listserver@xxxx.xx.xx, with this text in the first
message line:

set tCG password OLDPASSWORD NEWPASSWORD

Replace "OLDPASSWORD" with your old, "NEWPASSWORD" with
your new password. Do not replace the 3rd word,
"password"!

*------------------------------------------------------
| 7. HOW tO bEhAVE iN A MAiLiNG LiST
*------------------------------------------------------
__ALWAYS__ add your e-mail address to the bottom
of your mails or otherwise no one will know who wrote
the mail (all mails have their origin at
"tcg@xxxx.xx.xx"!)! Many mail programs offer "signature
files" that do this job for you automatically.

Most subscribers of the list get their mails in
"digest" mode (see 5), this means one mail is listed
under another in one large mail. So IF YOU REPLY to
a mail in the digest list, do two things:

1. don't quote the whole digest mail but quote only
the part of the digest mail that includes the message
you want to reply to.

2. As many mails are sent to you as ONE mail in digest
mail, the single mails have no single subjects (how
could they!), only the whole digest mail has the
subject "TCG digest xy". So please cut the subject of
the mail you want to reply to and paste it in the
subject field in the header of your reply.
