Apologies for not giving feedback on the problem I posed, I'm at school the whole week (unfortunately) so I can't send, only read. Anyway, the last algorithm seems the best one, although funnily enough I spoke to the guy who set the thing today and his solution was what was originally suggested - simply searching for a repetition over one then two etc. ie. brute force.
