Developing Java applications on Linux

Currently I am running Blackdown's port of the JDK
1.2.2. I know that there are other java compilers and
vm's out there. I've been out of java programming for
about 1 1/2 years now so I am not sure which one is
the best and fastest to use on Linux. I am interested
in hearing what others are using. I want to do most of
my programming using the Swing Set and make stand
alone applications.
