>Hi, >There's a tie between VisualAge and JBuilder.... > >If anybody has used both could you give me some >tips for making a decision? Why not download Sun's JDK 1.3 and write code with a text editor, Then compile your code from the command line? I use Jext as my editor of choice and either an Xterm or a DOS box depending on what OS I am using to do my compiling. I really don't see what the big fascination with IDE's is. And when I design screens for a program, I get out a nice piece of white paper and then I grab a pencil and I start designing. Then I try to emulate that design in my code, that to me is fun and it makes it more exciting, taking a concept from design and implementing it is all the fun. Programming for me is a form of self expression so therefore I tend to not like it when code is generated for me or screens are layed out visually by pointing, clicking and dragging. Having all the programming tasks automated takes the fun out of programming in the first place. But anyway that is just my opinion. Maybe this is why I release all my code as open source too. Programming for me is not a job but a h! obby, but an art form and my way of expressing myself to the world. But enough about my opinions. I think JBuilder is a descent IDE and has very good interface and runs pretty fast, I've got it installed on a PIII 500 w/256 megs of ram and it runs pretty fast. If you compare its job with say a native IDE like Visual C++ then it runs probably just about as fast as it, its overall not bad. Whatever you do just make sure you have alot of fun doing it!!!
