Breathing new life into my Palm

# 16693

After my initial amazement I started to use my Palm PDA less and less in the recent months. I somehow couldn't get myself to replace my cellphone's organizer with it. Even though the Palm calendar is about one billion times more capable than the sucky one that came with my phone I don't carry my PDA in my pockets at all times (read: I'm too lazy to get used to something new).

The new semester started two weeks ago and suddenly I find myself again in a hundred boring lectures that only require your full attention for a few dozen minutes in one and a half hour.

So I thought of all the lengthy articles People recommend me but for which I never have time to read. Ideal reading material for my lectures!

Tonight I tinkered with Plucker and can now "Send to Palm" any HTML file on my PC. My PDA is now filled with interesting stuff to read.

I really intended to skip Computer Science tomorrow, but now I am eager to go!

The final countdown

One week, seventeen hours, 30 minutes!

I think I will need to tranquilize myself by Monday, just to deal with the shaking.

P.S. Can't handle sci-fi? Boy would it suck to be you :)

Cellphones and Privacy

We often give out our cellphone number to our contacts at work without giving it so much as a second thought.

Often this does not pose a problem. Most people understand that calling up someone with a work-related matter after business hours is just rude. But eventually you'll meet a customer who doesn't care for ettiquette and you will find yourself in a pretty annoying situation.

For many, there is no real alternative to sharing your mobile number. When you're on the road for the major part of the day, or run your business as a secondary occupation, you don't have a business number to hand out and a second cellphone is overkill.

As a solution I would like to have my cellphone only accept a selected set of callers during certain hours of the day. So, for example, after seven ó clock in the evening I could switch my phone to "Friends only" and make sure that my leisure time wouldn't be disturbed by any other callers.

Keeping pace with technology

We're exposing our lives to all this technology, and social rules haven't kept up here. A while ago I read that in Japanese urban areas it is considered good manner to send out a SMS asking for clearance before you place your call. This sounds weird at first, but has some sense to it if you think about it.

I would go so far as to suggest making this a standard network service. Rather than placing calls, there could be a quick and easy way to send a request for a call-back. You would have all the advantages of synchronous (phone) and asynchronous (e-mail) communcation at once.

The technology to realize such a service is here today and once implemented it would be available to all current devices. By providing "social convenience services" like this network providers would still have plenty of room to innovate in a close to saturated market.

Unappreciated (people suck)

For the second time in two days I worked my ass off for somebody who then went ahead to tell me that my efforts were totally unappreciated and unasked for.

I'm unimaginably pissed and promise not to help anyone else this week. If you have any requests to make, you'd be better off to hold them back until next Monday.

People suck. Since I've now decided to be an asshole until Sunday night I should go and piss off someone just to improve my mood.
