Reading Macintosh

Hi!

Does anybody know whether a list of shortcuts (like ctrl + a = ...)
for MacOS 9 and OS X exists somewhere and if yes where to find it?? I'm a complete computer idiot that's why my question is possibly ridiculous i have no idea, nevertheless I'm going to teach students how to work with MACs... starting this Thursday, oh my gosh!! Well, good luck to me and thanks for your help!

The Apple knowledge base has a page on keyboard shortcuts on MacOS 9 and one for MacOS X.

It's a great thing when you get to know someone who didn't like PCs very much and after some months of hard work she is teaching people how to use them! I am proud to announce that I have successfully spread geekdom.

They're pretty much the same standard key tricks as on Windows. (Guess which one is the original. :-P ) On your Mac you will find a key that looks like this -->

...and is mostly referred to as "flower", "cauliflower" ("Blumenkohl"), "the Apple key" or "Cmd". On some Macs you'll only find the cauliflower sign, without the apple. Also, some Alt/Option keys will come with a sign like this -->

(Tip: An original Macintosh mouse has only one button. You can often hold down the Alt/Option key and click your mouse to simulate a right-button click.)

The 'standard' (=they work with most programs) key combinations: Press Cmd ("cauliflower") and...
A - Select all
C - Copy selection to clipboard
X - Cut selection (move to clipboard)
V - Paster from clipboard
W - Close active window
Q - Exit active program.

In general, don't be scared, Macs are very user friendly and easy to use. :-)

Maybe, but only in case you know how to use them :) You know I spent desperate hours in front of a mac not finding the combination for @ ;)

I admit that I couldn't figure out how to do it the last time I used a Macintosh computer. I ended up copying and pasting the character from other internet pages.

Weeelll... the key should be labeled properly on new Macs.

I can't seem to edit my last post, so here's something I forgot yesterday - there's probably a small programm called "Tastatur", hidden behind the Apple menu. If you start it and press some Alt or Shift or Whatever key, it shows you which key will produce which character. Check it out, simply press Alt and see what the G key does.
Now ain't that easy. :-)

PS: The @ thing was a problem I stumbled over before, too! Luckily I now found out the different ways to produce it on the different types of macs we have in our art-uni building!
