Bringing beauty and order to massive MP3 collections

I just wrote the ultimate guide about Bringing beauty and order to massive MP3 collections. This guide will show you how to:

  1. Automatically rename thousands of MP3s to pretty filenames

  2. Quickly sort those MP3s in folders responding to their genres

  3. Fix your Winamp playlists so they will work with the relocated files

Enjoy!

P.S. In case you have following the whole story: My epic project to structure and beautify my MP3 collection has finally crossed the finishing line. I wrote a third tool that helps you to subdivide your collection into genre folders. It's pretty efficient and learns from your input.

Created out of year-long frustration about not being able to find tools to do it, I hope the guide and the tools will help other people to turn their music collections into something to brag about.

May you also put the files in subfolders by Artist name and not by Genre?

Not with this tool. But for €5 I will write it for you!

Why yes, I am pretty broke.

Re: Bringing beauty and order to massive MP3 collections

I've always organised my MP3s by artist (with the song name as the filename). Genre is pretty meaningless to me, I wouldn't have the slightest clue as to what genre any music is supposed to be.

It's still a pretty neat idea to have automatic organisation scripts. I might bother to write some maybe, but not in Perl ;)

How to order

I think everyone has their own favorite method to order their collection (if they have one at all). I personally like subdividing by genre because sometimes I'm in mood for dance music and sometimes I'd like to hear some ballads. Also I usually don't have too many songs from one artist.

Also writing a script to automate sorting by artist name didn't pose enough of a geek challenge :-D

Re: How to order

Hmm some Artists are always written different.
Like:
Red Hot Chili peppers
Red Hot Chilli Peppers
Red Hot Chili Pepers

would it be enough of a challenge to make it put all mp3-files in an artist directory with the most used name and to automatically change all other names to that one ?
;)
