Poor old wabbit

Wow.

I went round to the people's house this morning, the ones who we suspected owned the rabbit. They did own it, and they had absolutely no idea that this rabbit had been missing for four days!

No wonder it's got through a whole bag of rabbit food in a week, the poor thing must be starved. I felt sorry for it as I put it back in its owners' hutch, it was filthy, and quite obviously hadn't been cleaned out in over a week.

I'm contemplating telephoning the authorities....

Keep the rabbit and give them a stuffed animal instead, they probably won't even notice. How moronic can one be.

That's unbelievable. To be honest, if I'd seen what you've described, then I would have taken the rabbit and gone straight back home with it. Obviously, you'd take it to a pet shop at some point, who WOULD look after the poor thing. People like that shouldn't be allowed to keep animals. I would like to instantiate a new law which says that 6 months after being sold an animal, the owners must be inspected in their own home. A surprise visit too. I'm sure many animal lovers out there would agree. Chances are though, no-one would put that through.

Gee thanks, now I feel real guilty for putting it back in its hutch :-(

I'm honestly not sure what to do. At the end of the day, it's nothing to do with me. Also, they live like 3 doors down from me, so sooner or later they'll know that I phoned the RSPCA.

Is it worth the trouble that may cause? I'm not sure, but I can't help feeling guilty about wanting to get rid of the rabbit so bad that I put it in that horrible place.

Well, as you say, there's a good chance that the owners won't appreciate you calling the authorities and in the WORST case scenario, they may decide to, um, get rid of the rabbit. Obviously I don't know what these people are like (other than crap pet owners), but maybe you could have a little chat with them? No threats, just point out that maybe the rabbit would be happier if left clean.Ultimately, its up to you and whether or not your "guilt" (it's hardly your fault) outweighs your concern regarding um, comebacks on any decisions you make. I'm not being entirely helpful am I? There's always the oh-so-subtle leaflets through letterbox tricks. Up to you. Me? As I said, I'd take the damn thing back, but then I've had two rabbits myself and took DAMNED good care of them.

I'm not stealing a rabbit. Apparently it's happened a few times before. I'll pop around there later on today hopefully I can sneak around the back without them knowing, and see if it's ok, and whether they've cleaned it out

If not, I'll ring the RSPCA

Chat

I second that. Maybe hearing that you were worried about the rabbit's condition is enough for them to realize they've screwed up.
