Does anyone know anything about the Island of Rapa Nui in the Pacific off the coast of Chile? Its more common name is Easter Island, but the polynesian peoples who still live there call it Rapa Nui, also the name of their language. This is a subject which i had some interest in when i was in school (5th and 6th Grade) and had forgotten about until recently i saw it mentioned in a book i was reading. If anyone had any information or would like to have a discussion about this place, i would love to hear/have it.

I read some crazy theories (involving aliens visiting earth in prehistoric times) about the huge stone statues on that island. Their point was that the island's inhabitants would never have had the material and manpower necessary to build those figures.

So have i thought, but how do we know for sure what the people did have and how much manpower was at their disposal. I once saw a documentary on the inhabitants of the island and it was dealing with an annual "competition" they held called the "birdman" (if i remember correctly) and it was a grueling physical event in which many young men probably died, but to those who completed it and especially to the one who won, there was a great deal of respect, (ie he was the "birdman" for a year until the next competition). For them to do this, makes me wonder exactly what they are capable of. If i remember, the moai (statues) are all made of the rock from one of the volcanoes on the island and there are still some unfinished ones in the lava bed. I do, however think, that it would have been very difficult for them to move them as most of them weigh (i believe) at least 25 tons. Where do you think they came from?

I think a v long time back, there was this B/half soft porn/R(A)movie with Jason Scott Lee in it on Rapa Nui (u see, I can't even r'ber the movie's title, might've been called Rapa Nui, ha!). That's my one and only time I heard abt the pl. :)

Hey is this the place you said that had those large statues that had ears like a rabbit and no one knows how they got there? I think I remember you telling me this.

Apparently they have proved that the ststues are carved by the same peoplr, or at least in exactly the same mannar, as other stuatues found around the island.
