Have they really made a film of Hitchhiker's yet? I know that it has been in the pipeline for ages but maybe we're a bit slow when it comes to news and movies in Britian!

I heard that he sold the rights to Disney but that stuff got halted when he passed away?

Re: Douglas Adams

I saw the movie literally years ago. I think I heard something about that Disney thing too though. They might be making another.

Re: Douglas Adams

They've not made a film yet, but one is in the pipe-line, there was a Bbc series made (that has been released in the UK edited together on 2 videos) back in 1981. That might have been released as a film but it was six 30 minute episodes.

Disney isn't making the film now below is an excerpt from an email I received:

It's been a very quiet time for announcements, but finally, there's some very good news for fans of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: the Hitchhiker¹s movie finally has a green light. The Directing and Producing team of Hammer and Tongs (aka Garth Jennings and Nick Goldsmith), based in the UK are at the helm and long term supporters Spyglass Entertainment in LA are the Producers. By a strange twist of fate Nick and Garth are based just ten minutes walk from Douglas¹ house in Islington, London, so in some ways Hitchhiker¹s is coming home. Karey Kirkpatrick (Chicken Run, James and the Giant Peach) has written the new screenplay, which was very much based on the final draft that Douglas wrote. Karey has also had access to new material and ideas that are in the archive from Douglas's computers that was created following his death.

There is a really, really bad film adaption out there which is probably responsible for putting off millions of latent Hitchhiker fans from reading that brillant book.

This just happened yesterday:

  • Me: You haven't read the Hitchhiker? Are you kidding me? You're studying computer science dude, you're on your way to become a real geek and you're telling me you've never read the greatest book to ever see the sun?

  • Him: Well... I saw the movie some years ago. It was so bad I had to switch it off halfway through.

  • Me: Argh!

I cannot remember how often I have experienced this exact conversation in my life.

Re: Douglas Adams

I've never actually met anyone else who has seen the movie. I remember it being pretty bad, but I want to see it again anyways.

Re: Douglas Adams

Sure, we read the Hitch Hiker's Guide of the Galaxy in school. Absolutely great! Adams was a brilliant writer. His humour is almost unbeatable :)

Well, there's still Terry Pratchett... ;)

And yes, I did read the complete Hitchhicker's Guide trilogy (in german and english) and both Dirk Gently books... But I didn't like the latter quite as much as the Guide.

I got two other referals (sp?) to Douglas Adams, so I decided to read one of his books. However, I don't know which one to start with, so I was wondering if I could have a few suggestions. Also, isn't Douglas Adams the guy who also wrote a comic strip?
