According to a German magazine penguin males pay penguin females for sex.
The females require pebbles to build their nest. Because these pebbles are a scarce resource on Ross Island in Antarctica, female penguins secretely abandon their lovers for a short while in order to offer their "services" to other single penguin males. After the intercourse the single male pays the female with some pebbles from his stock. The female drags the pebbles back home and works on her nest some more.
It doesn't always have to be sex. Often a little cuddling is enough for the female to be able to collect her pebble fee. Fiona Hunter, a zoologist, once watched a female collect 62 pebbles without getting laid.
This must be the cutest fact, ever.

But, I question exactly why someone would dedicate their time and energy to researching the currency exchange among penguins.
They probably just stumbled across it while checking out Antarctica :) And anyway, you can never have enough cute penguin facts. If I were to rule the world, we'd have tons of penguin research.

A friend of mine and I decided that in order to achieve world domination, one must include an army of penguins. I'd tell you how but that's top secret info (either that or it'd send the BS facter alot higher than nessicary). ;-)

You fail it.
That is really truly great (for lack of a better word).
It kind of makes you wonder if peguins are more evolved than other birds. I mean, humans are the evolved (unless you are a cynic and believe humans have been declining in the evolutionary ladder) version of homo erectus, so is the penguin a step ahead of other birds, like we are a step ahead of the chimps?
Just something to think about...
