Humiliating, ain't it?

First journal entry, why not embarass myself just a little bit, right?

So I was at work one day, ringing people up,(I work at Suncoast Motion Picture Company) and this guy and his family come in. It's him and two kids, a girl and a boy. They pick out some movies and he comes up to the counter with a few and his daughter comes up with one of her own.

I ask if she's going to get it herself, she looks around 15, so I assume she's got money of her own, he confirms it. I ring him up, he pays with VISA, I check his ID, y'know the deal. Her turn now. Scan the movie, "Do you want a bag?" blah blah blah. She pays with a VISA.

Now it looks just like his, even as beat up as his, so I don't bother to check ID till I notice that she's pulled hers out. I say, "Oh cool, you've got one too? I had to wait to get mine," thinking that maybe there's some program at Bank of America where your child can have a limited check card in case of emergencies. She's looking at me like I've suddenly grown a second head. The thought never crossed my mind that she could be older, because she looks SO incredibly young and her chest is barely level with the counter that comes up to my waist. I'm only about 5'10.

Suddenly feeling stupid, realizing she might be 17 or 18, I check her ID. She's 25. It was probably the guy's freakin wife.

About this time I finish up the transaction, and without a word she's on her way, and it's my turn to feel small.

Hehe .. another one for the normalization bank, eh? (insider joke)
there's lots of folk living on this planet who think anybody smaller than a given said size is younger and anyone who is way higher than that most be looots years older :)

whyever this strange thinking occurs, it's particularly unnerving ;)
- me, who is of a height of 197 cm - no, we dont measure in body parts over here (or stones and other similar stone-aged things), so go calculate for yourself! - has the 'luck' to get thought of being way more older than I'm really are.

Fact is:
... possibly I get taken for being 5-7 years older than I really am, because thanks to ALWAYS being taken for 5-7 years older than you really are, sonner or longer you take on this wanted behaviour
... I get offended if someone assumes that I'm of an age older than 28 years
... IRL I am currently of an age of 23 and a half years ;)

It wasn't just her size, I mean when someone has aged, you can generally tell even if they're really short, but it was her face too! She'd have looked young even if she was my height, but looking that young in the face and the fact that she's half my height, and I'm not even that tall, it was just weird.

I still felt stupid though.

sorry, but that's plaing fucking WRONG. I've got lots of friend where you simply cant guess their real age - eg. take one of my best friends: she not even is kinda small, but also looks in the face kind of 16ish, although she's long out of that age (actually she's 20, turning 21 in a few months!). Take another closer friend of mine, of whom you might have thought he would be 23,24 years old, but IRL he just turned 19! There are lots of more examples, that dont turn out into the wrong age only with body size, but also and especially by the shape of his/her face, behaviour, etc.

Oh, i know, it's great.

i'm always having to prove that i'm UNDERage to get stuff cheap. i haven't abused this yet though. not much point really. i'm not into clubbing. perhaps if i took earmuffs i would go and laugh at everyone else... but mpst of my friends are overage and buy me what i want, so its not really an issue.

still, i think i'll have to try it just for the hell of it one day.

I'm used to being on the other side. I've had facial hair since I was 15 and I've had a beard since about 17. I've never been carded for age reasons in my life.

I get varied answers, for some reason. ill go to a club or something (fake ID) and one guy will ask me, so how old are you? my usual response is "how old do you think i am?" one guy will answer, "eh, i duno. 23, 24?" another will answer, "not old enough to be here, what, 16, 17?" or "wheres your mom, kid?"

its quite strange. very few people have been able to guess my age properly. im usually taken for older than i am though. occasionally younger. but sometimes its a LOT older, and sometimes just by a few years.

im 15 for anyone whos wondering ^^;;

I'm 15, too. I've been mistaken for 13 up to 23 years old, it's crazy. I don't think you can guess how old someone is just by looking at them. I mean, for one, everyone thinks Brad Pitt is in this early 30's. Wrong. 40's. And what about George Clooney? 60 what??? Nope. 42. Okay, they might be bad examples, but they are examples.

I have a good one, johnny depp.

Silence.

What was i talking about agian, i was too busy drooling.

oh yes, he does not look 40. there are eons of people who do not look their age. i've been trying to work out what factor it is that makes us determine an age estimat for someone.

i have come up with the following:

1. Facial Features. mainly around the eyes and mouth. particularly the way their mouth is shaped while they talk.

2. centre of gravity. the older you are, the higher the point of body you "lead" with is.

3. ??

someone finish my list.

3. By the way they talk. This isnt always true, because i know old people who talk like theyre 12 and 12 year olds who talk like their old. But sometimes you can tell by their vocabulary. Er something... <_<;;;

Well, mostly i suck at guessing ages. So i suppose you shouldnt really take it from me. ^^;;
