Sin_City.jpg

It's Robert Rodriguez's (Deserado, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Spy Kids) next movie. Based on the comic book pictured above by Frank Miller. It's written by Robert and Frank Miller himself. The two are collaborating to try and make the film represent the comic in a way that is true to both it's story and it's unique visual style.

Not only am I excited about the fact that Rodriguez is writing and directing it, but the film is to star some of the world's greatest acting talents (in my opinion at least).

Mickey Rourke will play the lead... I'm not a huge fan of his, but he does seem to have the features.

The amazing list also includes:
Bruce Willis, Johnny Depp, Leonardo DiCaprio, Steve Buscemi, Benicio del Toro, Michael Douglas, Christopher Walken & Elijah Wood.

If you haven't read the comic, I suggest you pick it up. It's really fucked up. Gave me nightmares.

Hm.. sounds interesting.. I might take a look at it. :)

As for the cast, such as Johnny Depp, and Bruce Willis... wow. Very good choices, heh.

Please, someone, share my joy!

Jessica Alba is a horrible actress, but she's hot as hell. I suppose these could be fake, but they look pretty authentic to me.

Well, they're not fake, those pictures are being put out by the official site. I'm kinda disappointed with Jessica Alba being cast as Nancy. She's hot, but Frank Miller always described/illustrated Nancy as like.. the most drop dead gorgeous woman to ever live. I guess I can't think of someone better to play her, but that doesn't keep me from being a little put off.

I'm pretty sure I've read all of the Sin City stories, and for once I hope the studio puts pressure on them to make it a tad lighter than the comics. They were SO friggin' dark that I actually lost sleep. They really bothered me *shakes fist at Frank Miller*. I'm sure that's what he was going for though. Mission accomplished, Frank.

With Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller directing, it will definately be something to see.

Hah, well if those are fake, then that's even worse. Nancy's supposed to be.. shall we say a bit more well endowed than Jessica there. Ok a lot more. If I find some of Frank Miller's art I'll show you what I mean.

Yeah, I have all of Sin City scanned on my comp. Here's the best pic I could find of Nancy that didn't give any story away.

Think that looks anything like Jessica Alba? I say nah.

No... but who could you get to play her? Pamela Anderson?

I do know that Frank Miller was involved in the casting process, so I take some comfort in that. At least he would have chosen people he thought could best portray his characters.

A lot of the actors chosen don't look their part at all. But then some others are really perfect. Benecio Del Torro looks perfect for his role (but I think they added some chin). Mickey Rourke looks pretty good as Marv.

Yeah, that's what I said, I can't really think of anyone better. I'm just a little disappointed. Mickey Rourke looks great as Marv, even though I don't usually like him. It's just his kind of role, so good times there. Rosario Dawson looks damn near perfect as Gail, who'd have thought it.

And Bruce Willis is going to be great as Hartigan, I just know it. Probably one of my favorite characters.

I'm surprised no one has commented on this thread since the film came out. Thoughts, reactions, comments, etc.?

I was half-dragged to it, as some guys I know wanted to see it more than I did (but I never pass up a free movie ticket!). Unsurprisingly, my best friend and I were 2 of oh, about 9 women in the packed theater.

My reaction was mixed. I liked it better than the newspaper reviewer did, but I didn't find it terribly appealing, either. I know they were adapting from graphic novels, and that they were trying to adhere to the plot, but I thought that it was too disjointed; in some ways it had too much story, and in some ways not enough. The three-man structure didn't work as seamlessly as, say, L.A. Confidential, where the film is only loosely like the novel but manages to convey everything quite well anyway, and still keeps the three main characters distinct.

Visually, I thought the film was interesting, particularly the noir style, and very well done. I enjoyed seeing it, but considering the yuck factor, I don't know that I'd want to see it ever again.

Anyone else? Bueller, Bueller?

Hasn't come out here yet but am planning to see it when it does. The trailer looks... interesting.

I look forward to hearing your reaction after the film jumps to Europe. "Interesting" is a good phrase to use. Kind of like when someone is "interesting-looking."

I think it was one of those movies that was more that I bargained for....

I just saw the movie! (got it from some "unofficail channels")
It's raw, bloody, hardcore, violent, sick, twisted, full of gore, but I love the movie. Heroes and Anti-heroes and perfect villains. Horrible crimes and poetic justice, haven't seen that in a while. Good monologs. All-in-all great movie but makes your stomach turn inside out!

Vladimir, a truly happy person!

I think they did an amazing job with the visuals and they were very true to the comics... but something was lost in the translation from comic book to film.

It seemed like they rushed through a lot of things. Like they were trying to cram all three stories into the movie. Really, they could have done just two and had it fill an entire two hours.

Also, the movie never really shows in detail how the stories intertwine. In one of the comics, Dwight and Marv work together. This could have tied things together nicely, but they chose not to cover than one.

The fight between Marv and Elija's character loses some of it's effect when it only lasts 30 seconds. Not that they should have drawn it out or anything, but when you're reading the comics, you see the expressionless face of Elija's character as he's flying through the air to kick Marv in the face... the still images afford you an opportunity for these things to sink in.

Overall it was good, but not as good as it should have been... I've heard there's going to be a special DVD set that you can get with an entire DVD devoted to each story with a lot of footage that they had to cut. I'm looking forward to that now...

Re: Sin City

On a side note, does anybody have more info on the second part? It seems they'll introduce some additional characters (e.g. Ava). I'm wondering if the new episodes will be as faithful to the comics as those in the first part, or if new stories will be written just for the film. The working title (A Dame to Kill For) kinda suggests the former, but who knows.
(Also, I hope Mr. Shlubb & Mr. Klump have another one of their excellent conversations.)
