Is anybody else unhappy about the recent crap going on
about internet radio? The RIAA and other big money organizations want to suppress internet broadcasters.
I run a small, but well rated station for no profit...
playing mostly independent artists who would otherwise
get no airplay at all...
I have obtained written permission from most of the artists to play their music at no charge, provided it's non-commercial
How can the gov't dare to refuse me this ability if I do it legally? But...the DCMA wants me to pay artists from the big record companies who I never play anyway...why?
There's no way I'll ever play Metallica(TM) again....they screwed themselves with the Napster deal...
and this was a band who would be nowhere without the bootleg tapes being played by college radio stations...
the only solution seems to be to use overseas servers...which is what I'm going to do...I understand malaysia & belize want no part of the RIAA
ARRRRH....HOIST HIGH THE JOLLY ROGER...PIRATE RADIO RULES!!!

Hi skelmonkey and welcome to NAO.
Sure this sucks. I'm an independent artist myself and the only plays I get are on stations like yours.
I guess acts like this cannot be prevented while companies are allowed to pay huge lobbying sums to American politicians (and they certainly aren't going to stop this additional income for them).
The big media corporations are about to annihilate their whole consumer base. I don't think everybody here even knows what they are planning. CDs that don't work in your PC and car stereo are only the beginning. They want to require us to buy "thrusted devices" to be able to play future music and films. They want screens, speakers, even cables with sealed, proprietary encryption built in so you cannot tap any source.
Imagine buying that new album, and to play it you have to buy a new CD player. And a new amplifier. And new speakers. And cables. That's the brave new world of new media.
But I bet this is going one step to far. People won't throw away their old equipment, some people are going to crack the encryption, and once a single MP3 or DivX escapes Pandora's box is wide open.
CD sales are already down from their Napster-time heights. They are pushing it too far, and they will feel the backlash.
I have spoken.

hi there...
just curious, what kind of music do you do?
mostly I specialize in metal, goth, industrial and comedy
with a bit of classical and world music at odd intervals
any way you could send me an mp3?
oh yeah...there's a loophole in the dcma rules
"artists and representatives are permitted to negotiate these terms seperately"
so if I get your official okie dokie for non-profit airplay...
they can't touch us
that is if you want airplay
(dinky as my station is...lol)

Like every artist I have problems describing the style I write songs in... I mostly do not-too-slow Ambient/Chillout music with sad melodies. Most of my (released) works can be downloaded from www.mp3.com/lt/. If you feel like downloading only a few songs, get these (in this order):
- The Girl who walked the Clouds
- Against the Fall of Night
- Cassandra
My okie dokie is given for any non-profit airplay..

I'll check your stuff out...if I think it fits the format on one or both of my stations, do I have your permission to use it for non-profit internet airplay?
by the way, gang...Radio Free Antarctica will be on loop til sometime saturday morning....my cable modem died and that's the earliest they can replace it...though I may set up a short broadcast live from gentledeepwaters' computer while she's out of town...(busy downloading new stuff)

Yes, of course you have! If only one more guy or girl listens to my stuff, that's a huge success.
