Fate

Does anyonebelieve in fate? Or some form of higher being that is having a hand in our destinies?

Im not religious. Ive always liked the idea that i control my own life, but certain events have led me to inadvertantly believe in fate, of a kind. I dont believe it controls my life but i do believe there is something pshing me to take my life in certain directions. Not directly but making what would otherwise be calle coincedences occur to suit its purpose.

The biggest thing that made me think this was when i met my ex. I hadnt seen this person for 6 years, nor any of her family nor had i heard anything about this girl that i was enfatuated with for six months in my younger years. Then after seeing her on the bus, though not saying anything to her because i was unsure it was her, i saw her down town one night. This time i did speak to her. In the space of the next two weeks i just happened to run in to her brother, her best friend and the girl herself twice. I hadnt seen any of them for six years. Its not like they had moved house or gone anywhere. They had been there all along but now i just happened to be meeting all of them, by coincedence.

I believe something determined that i should be involved with her just as it had a hand in breaking us up.

Is it unnormal to believe in this? Why do i believe in this all of a sudden? I that has never believed in anything.

It isn't at all unnormal or irrational for a person to form a belief after some very interesting things happen in a short period of time. Such as running across a set of people that you had disassociated yourself from for several years. It's my belief that the idea of fate becomes manifest in the human mind at some point of time or another to be either believed in or not for the bulk of that person's life.

I cannot believe that fate exists, or at any rate, in the sense that I believe that you meant it. Mainly because of the beliefs held by most of the worlds religions, usually involving free will, and fate would relieve us of that beautiful right.
In christianity, god gave you free will, or as some put it free agency, or just agency. There is also scripures that say that there is a definite hand of god in all of our lives and that he is leading you down the path that you were meant to go down.
I take this to mean that, while man does in fact have free agency, as god does have divine power, he might be able to affect the happenings around you. This is the only "fate" that I am willing to believe. For example if I go to the store the exact moment the price on something went down it could be the hand of divinity in action, pardon the phrase...
But that is the only way that I accept the concept of fate.
I hope that this was the kind of answer that you were looking for.

I should be ashamed of myself.

Believing in fate is certainly not unnormal, many do. But don't make the mistake of underestimating coincidence.

The way I see it, every day hundreds of coincidences almost happen to you. Almost. And then, a few actually do happen. Those are the ones you notice (the only ones you can notice). Meeting your ex multiple times might just fall into that category.

'Repent, Harlequin!' said the Ticktockman. 'Get stuffed!' the Harlequin replied, sneering.

Re: Fate

Well i for one beleive in the higher being of if all is fate then one cannot choose and is bound to one set path no matter what happens to them. Say you buy a gun you have the choice to rob a bank or to just to use the gun for ski shooting and such. Either way you look at it you are the one that chooses.

Coincedences do happen of course but just suppose for a moment that fate wanted your life to lead in a certain way. Does it send some sort of apparition to tell you what to do to subtly make a few coincedences happen, changing life just enough to lead you down the right path. Remember your not fighting against it, none of us are trying to avoid our destiny or whatever so when these coincedences happen you just deal with it as it happens and think nothing more of it. We all have choices and can probably, inadvertantly avoid our 'destiny'. Most of the time though i reckon we dont because we arent trying to avoid it, seeing as we dont know what it is.

So thursday night i see my ex for the first in three months. Next day at the gym who should be there but her sister. I go there three times a week, her sisters never been there before! These things just keep happening...

Should you choose to read my replies to melmels post in 'love and life sense' you will notice reference to a certain trophy boy. A certain trophy that i had not seen/spoken of/thought of in well over a year. I mention him yesterday and guess who i run in to last night? Yep good 'ol trophy boy himself.

These 'coincedences are getting to be a bit much for me. From now on every single coincedence is being noted in this forum. Im looking to see what the actual scale of this phenomenon is. Its starting to freak me out.

Re: Fate

I don't think it's unnatural. I believe in Fate though, but in a different way than a lot of people. I think we can chose what we do in life (like whether we do or don't do drugs, or smoke, or pretty much everything) but Fate knew all along that that was what we would chose. But that's just me.
