Re: Punk Rock

Maybe a quarter to a third of those bands are ones that I wouldn't categorize as punk, and that's just from what I know. I mean, it's not a crucial point of information, and I'm not judging them (or, vicariously, you), I'm just saying it's not really "punk." Like Hoobastank, Matchbox 20, Dashboard, etc.

Rockin Bands

Sorry dude, you're right, I kinda thought of that after I got carried away and just started adding all my favorite bands. Hence the subject change (rockin bands) but yea.

Re: Punk Rock

Um... Rancid? Bad Religion? The Offspring? These are really three of the biggest names in punk rock (and my favorites as well).

There's also NOFX, The Trasplants, and if you want to get into classic punk, The Clash, Operation Ivy, & The Sex Pistols.

And if you're changing it to just bands that rock, that's a whole other ball of wax...

Rage Against The Machine
Queens of the Stone Age
The Darkness
The Vines
Jet (although everything about them is stolen :p)
AC/DC
Deep Purple
Nirvana

Yeah... that's good stuff...

Re: Punk Rock

Ewww, you said Rage Against The Machine...

I can't stand the lead singer of that band, it was so much better when they got the new singer and changed the name, what is the new name again?

*cough* Audioslave *cough*

When every word that comes out of the guy's mouth sounds like it has a 'w' in it, he probably should not be singing.

Wewe Da Wenagwades of Phunk! :]

Tom Morrello does so much better with that band.

Also, Jet annoys me. You should get away from punk and go hardcore. Disturbed is the best (new) hardcore band out there. They actually sing about something, it's hard, deep, and oh so dark. It's yummy. Furthermore, along more punky lines, there is always the aforementioned Offspring (being the only punk rock I enjoy), unless you can count Powerman 5000, but they seem more indie to me.

Anyway, down with the rage, and up with Audioslave!

I should be ashamed of myself.

I have to second the suggestions of Op Ivy, Rancid, and NOFX

Also, Link80 is a great ska/punk/oi band, though a little hard to get your hands on.

Re: Punk Rock

When someone writes lyrics like these...

The main attraction - distraction
got you number than number than numb
Empty your pockets son; they got you thinking that
What you need is what they're selling
Make you think that buying is rebelling
From the theaters to malls on every shore
Tha thin line between entertainment and war
The frontline is everywhere, there be no shelter here
Speilberg the nightmare works so push it far
Amistad was a whip, the truth was feathered and tarred
Memory erased, burned and scarred
Trade in your history for a VCR

... and has a shit-kicking rock band to back them up, they should spit em' loud and clear IMO.

Some history: Tom Morello (guitar) Tim Commerford (drums) Brad Wilk (bass) and Zach de la Roacha (vocals) were Rage, then de la Roacha left and Chris Cornell entered as the new lead singer and they became Audioslave. Now, I didn't hate Audioslave like some people... but they just aren't the same.

You should get away from punk and go hardcore. Disturbed is the best (new) hardcore band out there

Hey, I was just listing what was asked for. I like hardcore rock as well, particularly early System of a Down and a swedish group named In Flames (Clayman- worst cover design ever, but some really ripping guitar riffs).

A couple other musical notes: One band I forgot to list earlier is Billy Talent. They qualify under a lot of different genres. I really like their music, and they are also fantastic live.

Secondly, I have noticed people online have taken to saying "rawk" instead of rock. If I had my way, everyone who did that would get a facefull of my fist. :p

Re: Punk Rock

Oi! is the culmination of the ska and punk movements in England, where the two streams converged. It's distinguished, often, by choruses of "Oi! Oi! Oi!" at some point in the song. I couldn't tell you how to discriminate between skunk rock (ska+punk) and oi, but I imagine there's a difference.

Out of curiousity; What the hell is oi?

Oi! or Oi! Punk is a kind of lets say .. music scene that defines itself as totally NON-political. Oi! like in Oi-Skins or Oi-Punks. A friend of mine actually has changed to the 'Oi!-fraction' because he by now totally dislikes this all left- and right-winged thinking that we both considered to be totally the same, just seen from another point of view. So by now he is into UN- or NON-political punk. But that's just the point of view of someone who has Oi-punk friends, I'm not really into this, ie. not an expert to this topic.

Something I found on the net about this (copy + paste from over here):

Oi-Punk: Oi-Punk was founded by skinheads which were totally unpolitcal, it only deals with football, being jobless and unsuccessful and drinking alcohol. Oi stands for skins and punks united, Oi is the only example for friendship between skins, which are not racicts and punks. Broilers is a German example for a Oi! Band.

Another source could be Wikipedia.org: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oi

Re: Punk Rock

You seem to have quite a good list going already. Breaking Benjamin, A.F.I., Hoobastank... And the already-mentioned Offspring and Audioslave are good choices too.

However, I would also add:
Linkin Park
Nickelback
Saliva
Shinedown
Staind
Three Days Grace

I dunno, maybe people think these are too mainstream, but I like them. Shinedown definately rocks.

On a related topic, how are you / did you like iTunes?

I'll see your two cents, and raise you a dollar... :)
