NAO Hardware Upgrade

I'm putting this in my journal because it's not of too much public interest. :-) If you were having trouble reaching NAO today from 11:15-12:20 GMT (coincidentally, my lunch break), it was because of a server upgrade on short notice. Everything should be back to normal now.

This is what NAO's new home looks like from the outside.

Consider yourself hugged.

Computer upgrades aren't really that expensive anymore, unless you plan to upgrade a super-computer.

At the most, all you need is to spend $800 to purchase a new light-weight server, which isn't all that expensive anymore. You still need the operating system, but Netalive should easily run on a Linux or BSD box without problem.

For a heavier server, the needed addition would be a single Gigabit network card which can be expensive - $200 for a 1000 Base T, to $800 for a fiber-optic cable. You shouldn't need anything more than the 1000 Base T for a server on the class of Netalive.

As a matter of fact, it is an ordinary x86 (Athlon) box with FreeBSD on it. I also use it as my internet router, in-house file server and web development machine. For my purposes CPU power is way less important than storage space - even with NAO it's hard to get load averages above 0.05, but the HDDs are always close to being full.

Whoah, what kind of traffic do you expect? :-P

Definitely stylish, congrats! :) By the way, why is the screen on the ground, I don't understand? :P

Re: NAO Hardware Upgrade

That's because the server (and consequently, the monitor) is located in my living room. The whole thing looks like this. :-)
