Re: Music rules..

Yeah, you should check the first 2 out. The 2, LTE, is really a sub project of the drummer and the guitarist from DT (the first), however the keyboardist they recruited is now a DT keyboardist.

DT is a prog rock band, well, the prog rock band, getting much inspiration from rush, king crimson, and even metallica and megadeth. The current keyboardist was accepted into juliard at the age of9!

But definately a must see. I suggest for DT checking out Scenes From A Memory and Falling Into Infinity (specifically Hells Kitchen and Lines in the Sand) albums. For LTE, well, they only released 2 albums, and I think the second is the best (titled LTE2).

Definitely a must-listen-to band... very musically gifted.

Very melodic noise samples?

I think in terms of this:

You've got soft rock, which I think is utter crap, and we all know what soft rock is like: nice, slow. Can't think of any bands to fit. The only one that comes to mind is Kenny G, but by god if I ever hear someone refer to him as rock or 'music' I'll personally slit their throats.

Then you've got shit/poser rock (also known as "pop").

Then you get into just plain old rock, which fall along the lines the old time generic bands (Boston, Queen, and maybe theres some newer bands that play this thing called 'music' that is like that).

Afterwords you have heavy/heavier, which is when we get into Dream Theater and Tool (though Tool is more pot that heavy).

Next you have heavy metal, characterized by lots and lots and lots of distortion guitar. Megadeth fits in here, though sometimes they drop a category.

Finally you get into just plain ridiculous. When nothing but a piecer of a primordial melody or sometimes only rythm is audible/decipherable.

What! I'm sorry, but reading that question of yours gave me a brief epiphamy of being hit with a speeding semi-trailer. I'm sorry, but that is a sin in my book.

Oasis was alive and well, still are, in the early-mid 90's. They are a british rock group who has bout 7 albums out. My favorite being- What's The Story Morning Glory. They are responsible for returning British guitar pop to the top of the charts, along with Blur & Suede. (What's The Story) Morning Glory has sold more copies in Britain than any of the Beatles' albums.

It's Led by guitarist/songwriter Noel Gallagher, the Manchester quintet adopts the rough, thuggish image of the Stones and the Who, crosses it with "Beatlesque" melodies and hooks, distinctly British lyrical themes and song structures like the Jam and the Kinks, and ties it all together with a massive, loud guitar roar, as well as a defiant sneer that draws equally from the Sex Pistols' rebelliousness and the Stone Roses' cocksure arrogance.

Couldn't of said it any better myself.

But the combination of their sireen lyrics and tunes, they are definetly my top choice.

Now are ye undeceived! Welcome, again, my children, to the communion of your race!

And again I wasn't meaning to offend but I guess people take it personally when you have something bad to say about the music they listen to. Like I said, what you listen to determines the type of person you are. I'll stand by that comment. And I did want an honest opinion of what people like, and for the most part I think the people here have good taste. I don't think me calling trance and techno "cheezy" is really a rude, or wrong for that matter comment. Trance is total cheeze, are you denying that? I like some trance too, it can be uplifting and moving. For the most part, it's cheeze. Unless your really high on drugs, actually, you have to be high on drugs to enjoy that music. And Hardballkid was just as surprised about the "who the hell is oasis" comment. Cool dude that Hardball. A true creative guiness.
He hit nearly every note perfectly, and placed it in your head precisely where he wanted it, at will, for over 3 hours a show....

Re: Give me your top 5!

In Italy Oasis didn't even have as much success. 2-3 hits at most. I remember that they were sort of "popular" something like 6-7 years ago [wow time flies by] when I was in the second year of high school.

I have never liked them. Their voice sounds sort of metallic, and I also think that one of the two has problems at his nose, since he has an awfully nasal voice.

This is only my opinion of course. I prefer warmer voices, and perhaps more mature too.
What can I say, in Italy [I can talk only about what happened here] Oasis were the attraction for the teenagers; and even now they are listened by teenagers. The ones who are my age who would listen to that music, stopped when they grew up. At least the majority of them. [And of course I base myself only on the people I know that did that for a fact].

Tastes change in time, or at least methinks that.
When I was 16-17 I used to listen to Bryan Adams all the time, sometimes I listened to Boyzone and not anymore to Take That [I had already gone through that phase when I was 14-15].

Also, to repy to Zen... well I used to like Bryan Adams a lot probably because the compilation "So far so good" was the 2nd CD I've ever had. Actually it was my own first CD, but my mom used to lend me Madonna's "Breathless" [phew... fortunately my mom didn't know English, and when I was 7 I didn't know it well enough to know what hanky panky meant]. Then I got in 1992 Freddie Mercury's "The Freddie Mercury Album". This is the only reason I am very attached to the three of them. It is the stuff I've grown up with for at least 10 years. And it's not all bad music.

Then only thing I am certain is that I have never liked musician who would be "trendy". At least in Italy, you weren't considered cool if you didn't listen to say East 17, Oasis, Fools Garden... Maybe this is the reason I have never had the temptation to go and buy an album by Oasis, I don't know. I just didn't like what was going on in those ages in Manchester [just like now with Blue], which is producing bands/boybands every so often.

Also, one more thing... I won't discuss whether the music played by Oasis is great or what. I am relatively interested in that. I mean, maybe this is the wrong approach, but when I listen to some songs, I consider the music, the voice and the lyrics [if I am listening to a brand new singer/band]. So, if I like the music but I don't like the voice, the band/singer is out for me.

I think I value the voice more than the music I guess, but hey, if I know well how to play piano, and I can play every possible song, but I sing horribly [which is absolutely true, because I am out of tune in a tremendous way] I don't think that many people would say that I am so great, because my music is wonderful.

Sorry, but the correct german version of this song goes like this (hilited stuff is what was missing in your version):

Mein Hut der hat drei Ecken,
drei Ecken hat mein Hut
- hätt' er nicht drei Ecken,
so wär' er nicht mein Hut!

</smartass>

Note: 'Hut' (hat) is male in German. Probably only in Bavarian you might to want to say 'es' (it) to a hat. There's also this nice thing about 'das Butter', 'das Teller' and 'das Tisch', which in proper High German (Hochdeutsch) would be 'die Butter' (female), 'der Teller' (male) and 'der Tisch' (male, too).

Well, to be perfectly honest I was just writing down a song that I found in a phonetic exercise. I was talking about it the other day with null.

The text I found was not with Hut, but with Hund (don't ask me why), and I couldn't really make a sense out of that. So null and I decided that they had modified the text for some strange phonetic reason. I think it was in the chapter of pronouncing the last consonant of a word in a deaf way, and I suppose this is why it couldn't be Hut but had to be Hund.

As for that es... quite frankly I don't know why there is an es there, since I know that both Hut and Hund are masculine. I was just repeating the lyrics the way I found them written down, nothing more than that :P I also know how it is spelled the Konjunktiv II of the verbs to have and to be :P I just don't have the Umlaut on my keyboard :P and since I didn't bother to look the ascii code for it, I replaced it with an accent ;)

As soon as I learn some new tiny songs (modified of course) I will make sure to post them here so that we can have fun altogether...

As for that es... quite frankly I don't know why there is an es there, since I know that both Hut and Hund are masculine.

That's some strange german thing. I don't know the name or exact rule to it, but it appears elsewhere as well, e.g. when we say "ich bin es" (it's me). The "es" (or "das" for demonstrative purposes) is kinda like a universal placeholder for "this thing we're talking about / pointing at / looking at / whatever". This applies to things and persons alike, e.g. "Wer ist das?" - "Das ist mein Bruder."

A Brit group of two brothers (Liam and Noel Gallagher) plus the drummer. They must think that they are the new Beatles, since their haircut shows a predilection for the Beatles' style.

Used to be quite famous some years ago, but at least now in Italy they have lost their power, and relinquished the seat to some other stupid boybands (not that Oasis are a boyband) like Blue... yuck!

I don't know how popular they are in the other European countries though. I guess that it is normal that you haven't heard of them if you are American, because they are unknown there.

No it's not just your neck of the woods. Oasis was quite popular here when Champagne Supernova and Wonderwall came out. The problem with this thread is that when the music interests are not inline with the creator of the thread then the people contributing are talked to as if they are inferior. Obviously our musical interests have no merit here. Of course I could be the only one taking this out of this thread.

Musical interests are inherently personal in nature. What I like will not necessarily be what you like, which also neither makes my choices cheezy nor yours likewise.

Funny, but in all the posts, of those who've heard of Oasis, I haven't found anyone who's identified this band as part of the "third British Invasion", as it's sometimes called.
They're part of the same scene as Blur, Joy Division (later New Order), and Happy Mondays. They sprung from the now-defunct Hacienda (club) days, Manchester, England. 24 Hour Party People, a movie, talks about those wonderful, glorious days.
Kudos go to Pulp also for riding that tail.

The problem with this thread is that when the music interests are not inline with the creator of the thread then the people contributing are talked to as if they are inferior.

I don't think so. I think it's the case of the cultural differences.
I've run into it often enough with certain individuals that have posted to this very thread. A certain person is very curt, terse, biting, even, but I have to remember it's his Teutonic heritage at work. Call it the call of his ancestors, Zen might.
And, one needs remember, this is music wer're talking about. For some of us, this is like a religion. Kinda like the Jews and Arabs having a civil conversation about Gaza Strip.
I'm sure I'd have a very civil discussion on it over here, but were I to talk to someone like Judih, e.g., it might not be civil for very long--perhaps.

Enter in: such factors as talking here about the early-80s "Invasion", while the guy in the post next door is talking about Techno. Music can become perochial; like dialog, or dialect {look that word up, it has very interesting beginnings}, or a dilect, (i.e. Southerners in the US have a distinct twang to their voice. It makes them sound stupid to Northerners.) Might not be true, but with that dilect there's built-in assumptins and prejudices. Same applies to the language of music, a form of communication.

Music is a form of communication. It comes from the soul, and therefore it's alive and breathing. It is part of our physical structure, as in our dna, and is "in the blood"--so to speak. Therefore, it is extrememly personal: the words, music, beats, harmonies, distortions, chaos. Songs are like thumbprints, and can almost be used to identify one's personality; perhaps moreso than a person's religion.

"Obviously our musical interests have no merit here.

--have no merit THERE, perhaps?
If so, I agree.
But we in the states tend to think so narrow in our world view. Possibly some of the distain comes from an attitude of distain for our country. A distaste that we as a world-leader rightly deserve.
Through, I might add, no fault of my own. I wasted my vote by sticking with independants.

Of course I could be the only one taking this out of this thread.

Perhaps, but I think your points are no less valid.

I'll bet that just took 5 years off my life--but GODDAMM if it wasn't worth every second

It's okay that most of you have no taste in music, and that you're into todays' mainstream crap, but if you look a little deeper in to things than you see there is a lot more to learn. Oasis have many great albums. What's the story sold 18.2 million copies worldwide, and Definetely maybe sold 700,000 in the US alone. (the country that has never heard of them) And Oasis may sound and look like the beatles, that's because they want to. They love the beatles, they would be flattered by your comparing them to the beatles. They never denied that they weren't greatly influenced by the beatles..so what's your point? I think since none of you really know much about the band, you shouldn't comment on it. Do some research and then talk to me. Oasis has many great songs that I'm sure you have never heard, and maybe if you did, you would like them.
Oasis is/was a lot more than a "two hit wonder" band:

1994 Supersonic Modern Rock Tracks No. 11
1995 Live Forever Mainstream Rock Tracks No. 10
1995 Live Forever Modern Rock Tracks No. 2
1995 Rock 'n' Roll Star Modern Rock Tracks No. 36

UK:

Some Might Say #1 (27 weeks on chart)
Roll With It #2 (18 weeks)
Wonderwall #2 (34 weeks)
Don't Look Back in Anger #1 (24 weeks)
US:

Wonderwall #8 (20 weeks on chart)
Don't Look Back in Anger #55 (14 weeks)

On the contrary, I believe that you are the ignorant one for insulting people only because:

A) they have never heard of Oasis
B) they don't like the mentioned band

Nobody has insulted you here; everybody mentioned their tastes in music, topic started by you by the way. Furthermore, it is obvious that we don't all have the same tastes. Just like Zen (was it you?) said that he didn't like Bryan Adams when I do, I didn't insult him.

You see a mature person should respect other people and most of all their feelings. You are 22 but you seem more likely to be 14 for the way you act. You stumbled upon Nao, and the only thing you have done so far has been insulting several of the "old" members and probably also some of the "fresh" ones especially in this post.

If you were looking for a place where to post your bullshit and where to find easy targets to insult, tease and whatnot... well Nao is not that kind of place. Either move to one of the several weblogs on the 'net, which will accept any kind of crap you are willing to post, or start acting in a polite and respectful way, or LEAVE Nao for good!!

In the past I have gone through flames, "wars" here on Nao, and I think that Martin, null and Jaz and some few others know what I am talking about, but to be perfectly honest even if some big words were spoken back then I still respect Martin and null is one of my best friends (as well as Tammy :) ), not only on Nao but in general.

So, even if I argued with the mentioned persons, this doesn't mean that I don't respect them; on the contrary, Kitty, I have totally lost all the respect for you, because you simply don't deserve it. You are one of the most immature, disrespectful persons that I know; someone who is only good to comment on other people, their feelings and whatnot, and also a very spoiled kid who wants to have it her way; if you don't then you insult the unlucky ones who had the misfortune of being in disagreement with you. Please please please either you start being respectful and live in peace on Nao or get lost!

In fact I have had the misfortune of hearing of Oasis, and I have always disliked them; not only their music but they as persons. In any case, everybody has the right to express his own opinion and you are immature for not accepting that the others might have opinions/tastes different from yours.

Try to grow up a bit, and I am saying this for you, because insulting everybody you find on your way, who is in disagreement with you, will lead you nowhere in life.

Alright, alright... I admit that his sound has umm gotten worse and worse lately, but hey I am still stuck with his first hits. And methinks who can forget "Everything I do (I do it for you)"?

Also, I should add Freddie Mercury to my list, and Vacuum as well.. Oh my... My list is going to be incredibly long if I add all the other people that I like to listen quite often.

But here, I should add at least these

6) Sting
7) Vacuum (unknown band that probably made only once CD and then was forgotten)
8) Madonna (I don't like her so much now, but I guess I am in tune with the 80s songs she has made)

And as for Italian music is concerned...

9) Eiffel 65 (and therefore Gabry Ponte)
10) Alexia

Oh and what would happen here if I mentioned... ahem Take That? You know the band Robbie Williams was in before starting his solo career. Before you comment on that with a lot of jokes and such.. please consider that I liked them when I was 14 and that I don't anymore :P

My buddy's dad was (god rest his soul) an executive for A&M Records, Adam's label. His early shit, from Cuts Like a Knife, and Reckless, then Into The Fire--they were all awesome.
In concert, he has such energy, and well, had such showmanship.

In fact, when he really sings, the veins in his neck, and forhead bulge, as do his eyes. Pictures show this marvelously. We took to calling him "froggy," cause his bulging eyes :P

I guess right now, on the spur of the moment...

1.)
4 Strings, Overseer[Larry Tee] (At the moment, I'm confusing to two and I wanna say they are one and the same), and ATB (BEST EVER)

2.)
Disturbed (I can put the sickness in and listen to it over and over and over all day long)

3.)
Orgy (First album only, I couldn't get into anything but "Slept So Long" past that [Think that's what it's called])

4.)
Chicane (They weren't at the top only because they make very little music that goes well with guns)

5.) Ferry Corsten(Punk is the best frag tune ever [Most of my music is tuned for accompanying gameplay]... Digital Punk, Digital Punk...)

Of course for me this is subject to change daily.

Personally, I can see why you like at least 4 or the 5. Never heard of The Streets.
Radiohead is great, albeit a bit mellow. I like Kid A, and their live stuff.

mine are (in no particular order):
* ELO. Yes, that's right Electric Light Orchestra. I love they way they sound, how they harmonize, the works.
*Abba. Sickly sweet pop rocks, mid 70's disco at it's worst, but the songs easily grow on one, and it is exceedingly difficult for one's foot to keep still when one of their more poppy songs comes on.
*Led Zeppelin. They, much like Kiss, outlived everyone's expectations. True, they could not have been had it not been for the American blues thing, but they did have original songs, and they still fucking rock.
*Nina Simone. She is incredible. Her voice alone carries the message. The way she uses it, how she can be blusey and sensual, and feminine, and yet maintain her sense of self.
* The Funk Brothers. The biggest hit machine that no one's ever heard of. They created and perfected the Motown Sound. For all tense and purposes, they ARE Motown.

I'll bet that just took 5 years off my life--but GODDAMM if it wasn't worth every second

Currently we are decapitated (our head pastor went on to dallas...).

And yes we have a tech dept. Our church has got 4 extension campuses and we house our own web and mail servers. We even have a cluster server (though that's kinda ridiculous for our applications). Full video and audio suites, etc. etc. Community bands actually come to our church to do recordings.

Wow, a top 5, i find it hard to pick a top 10. I love music and give any genra a chance, i listen to allsorts, classic rock, all the way through to some contempory stuff. I love guitar and a variation of wierd instruments, a whole lot of dance music although im not to up on my genres, garage, psy-trance, drum and bass. Classical music like Tchaikovsky, Anton webern. A little pop. Some hip-hop now and again or rap or reggae, the list is endless.
Kittykat, id like to say, that i am a big Oasis fan but i dont care if anybody likes them or not really, the whole world could hate them but it wouldnt stop me banging out their tunes, theres nothing worse than someone trying to impose their musical tastes onto you, so if you like them, thats cool, carry on liking them, listen to them all you like thats your choice, it doesnt neccesseraly mean anyone else has too. I'm going to quote Frank Zappa here as best i can from memory in an interview of his i once heard which always stuck in my head... (proberly not exactly acurate)

" If there is a musical road that you dont want to go down, thats fine, you stay at home ill take the journey by myself... the only problem with that is that when i get back and tell you what the trip was like, you have to take my word for it becuase thats all you got, thats not a very smart idea, the best thing that you can do is at least come along for the ride, and if you dont like it, thats fine, you can turn back around and go somewhere else, try a differant road, at least youll be able to know what the journey was like based on your own experience rather than just my word, you never know, it might actually turn you on"

I think some of my best musical experiances but of course not all has been from bands none of you have heard of or i could even remember, the problem is that the big record labels will always have the distribution deals and the stores buy of them, so thyey could dish out any old rubbish and it will be on the top shelf of woolworths you know, but going to festies likw glastonbury and wondering around to the little tents and fields, i love catching the little bands you never heard of before and all the new talent out there, theres so much good music out there i think its a shame when people limit themselves to a particualar type of sound.
My top five would be..

1) Frank Zappa (musical genius)
2) Pink Floyd
3) Coorporate avenger
4) Oasis

Nice one, i totally agree with you there... Im a massive Zappa fan as well, he was a musical genius and a inspirational charecter. Which interview was it he said that in if you remember.

Ill leave with this

"Some Scientists claim that hydrogen, because it is
so plentiful, is the basic building block of the
universe. I dispute that. I say there is more
stupidity than hydrogen, and that is the basic
building block of the universe." FZ

Re: Give me your top 5!

The edit option doesn't seem to appear on my previous post, but I guess its unnecessary anyhow.

Thinking on I'm almost certain, assuming you use Kazaa that the filename was FZ_interview ? there was defiantly FZ in the title anyway, hope that helps.
