Jaz *** is unsure about...

It's away

74% | 3

I finally managed to sent off the proposal for my bachelor thesis with a request for comments. And that's just the proposal, not the real thing and I still managed to put this off for three long months, making it my personal procrastination record of late.

I've been repeatedly told not to take the whole project so serious, but when something is dangling in front of your head from the moment of your matriculation, you really want it to not suck. And here's the Catch-22: You may pick a safe topic that sucks or an interesting topic that might go horribly wrong and I couldn't even say which is the better choice.

If it comes back with a one-liner note saying that it's the stupidest idea ever, I think I'll just die.

What was it about? Of course, if you feel like reveal the title to us, and you don't think that talking about it before being approved will bring you bad luck.

I, on the other hand, have had the title for about a month now. I am already reading the books that I am supposed to use... If this is of interest to anybody, my title is "Structures of orality in Ay Kwei Armah's fiction". He is a writer from Ghana, and I am doing this thesis with my English literature professor (since obviously Ghana is one of the English speaking countries).

Should the proposal be accepted, the thesis would consist of the development of a tool which facilitates the organization and classifcation of music. I do not have a funky title for it yet.

development of a tool which facilitates the organization and classifcation of music.

Hey, that's indeed a good idea. At least according to my humble opinion. For example Windows Mediaplayer has already some kind of tool that classifies the music, but it is sort of "rigid", and I don't like it at all, because it doesn't classify it in the way I would want to have it classified.

So, yes, I think that your idea, if it became also something real, would be really great. Besides, studying what you are, I think it is hard to come up with a good thesis: either you make a compilative (so theorical) one or you come up with an idea like this one you had and make an empiric thesis.

Good luck with it, and keep us posted with the latest news! :)

Perhaps you could extend an existing music format with embedded XML tags, similar to some of the newer voice audio protocols.

Or you could use ID3 tags...

Then your software could dynamically classify music based on the tags in each file instead of having to maintain a centralized database. You could have smart lists like in iTunes that adapt based on the state of different songs and the contents of the library.

Good luck!

I certainly want to keep and meta information within the media files and not build another cockroach motel that hoards your data.
