I got a question about a font used in a java based menu.
When visiting this page it has the menu "Forum, Help, Games, Players....". I can see it as intended, I can click and open the sub-menus, which come windows-style (gray background, black font), but I cannot read any menu entry, because each character is displayed as "O" (the placeholder for non-existent characters).
I assume its a font problem of my PC rather than a problem of the webpage.
How can I identify the font used there in those sub-menu? The souce code of the page itself only defines the font for the the top level entries to the menu, which I can see alright. I'm using Win98SE, FF 1.0.7de, (though its the same with IE) and Java 1.5.0_01-b08.
Thanks.

null *** (11) throws in his two cents...
I have no idea what font it is, but it doesn't look to extraordinary on my Opera 8.50 with Java 1.5.0_02-b09 on Windows XP. The only fonts I've ever added are those of Office 2003 and some phonetic alphabets by Langenscheidt. If I were you I'd try getting a Java update, but I don't know if that solves the problem. It might also be a Unicode thing which is simply not supported on/by Win98.
If it helps any, I've made some screenshots of the menus in question. If all else fails you might at least be able to use them as a navigation help.
By the way, nice to see you back :-)

Works fine over here, too. I also looked at the applet source and it appears to use the font specified in the HTML everywhere (except the loading message, which is in Arial).
But thanks for making me crap my pants for the second I thought there was an online game based on the new Battlestar Galactica.

I'm busily awaiting the next episode...
Hell yes. But the series is on break until January, isn't it? Boy, how much more badass can a series cliffhanger get. I watched it six times already, three times in a row once. There would have been a trillion different ways to deliver this storyline in a cheesy way, but they pulled it off with so much badassery and overall ownage that just talking about it makes me want to watch it a seventh time.

Its a strange thing indeed... Thanks everybody for checking it out on your different machines.
I tried looking into the problem every now and then, but didn't find a solution yet. Its for sure though, that its a problem of MY PC, not the web site or any software involved.
I found out that several fonts I have installed behave really strange (including "Sans Serif", the one used in that menu). When checking them in the system/fonts folder by opening the preview they appear alright, but as soon as I use them in a third party software like Word or PSP, they are corrupted showing those "O"s only. I tried uninstalling, re-booting and re-installing them from various sources (other PC, clean Windows cabs, Office CD), but nothing helps, they always appear corrupted as soon as I use them in any software. Sounds like a virus or some malware really, but every test and check with the newest gadgets was negative. Never heard of anything like that before, nor did I find any rumors about it out there.
