Wired News reported that the online office products gOffice and Writely could help bring down the MS Office giant (not to mention Open Office and Google's beta of an Office Suite).
Is a web based office suite a viable option?

If you want just some solution you can use if you're not at home - why not? And if it's for your intranet, what better can there be than using your webserver for this stuff.
You probably could create something like this yourself, with only a little help from HtmlArea successors and some (unix) knowledge about how to create RTF-files and how to convert them into eg. PDF-format. Maybe there's even some program enabling you to convert HTML-code into Word 97 and other document formats.

I agree with ginsterbusch, great for editing documents in multiple locations.
For example it would really be great at college since I can't find a power cable for my printer and I have to print at our student computing center. Having the documents online for me to edit and print in multiple locations without having to save on my usb drive.
However I think that truly is the redeeming quality of online office products is simple documents with online storage and basic document functionality.
I'd quote cross platformability, but to be honest, have you ever encountered a Windows box without Office, a Mac box without [insert mac office product here], or Linux/BSD without AbiWord or KOffice or OpenOffice.org?

I would certainly like a service that lets me write and store documents that don't require formatting. For instance, it would let me type in subject, body text and destination address for a letter and format it nicely on its own. No button bars or dragging boxes.
For anything more complex, say homework or a seminar paper, no thank you.
