I can't say I have ever anticipated a game so much. So far I have tried both the single player and multiple player demos, and I am thoroughly impressed by the gameplay (though not the game's performance, as it runs slow on my GeForce 6).
I have seen the AI in this game which has finally bested Far Cry and CS:Source (which beleive it or not, has amazing group AI and solo AI). When I charged a guy standing on a platform, his reaction was to grab the rail and vault over. I looked where he once was, looked where he was, and died. All I could think was "wow".
Another interesting feature is the slow-motion ability. If things get rough, tap your slo-mo key, and bam, everything slows to a crawl and you are the only one making sense of it. After turning on the slo-mo mode, I was able to run straight into a crowd and thoroughly slaughter all of my foes without even working up a sweat.
And the guns, boy are the guns fun. I am in love with the game's stake and energy guns, which either pin enemies to nearby architecture, or fry them to a crispy crusty skeleton (both are quite impressive).
Lastly, on the graphics, I am in love with how nicely drawn every model is. This, I have to admit, can only be applied to the character models. Haven't been to impressed with the world, but the enemies, the good guys, the people are all nicely drawn...
Lastly, FEAR spells fear for a reason. 5 minutes into the single player demo, I shut it off because I was so creeped out. People with high end systems, give it a try for sure, those of you who aren't sure, consult system requirements.

I should be ashamed of myself.
I agree on some points you made but there are a few negatives I'd like to talk about. The graphics are amazing, by the way. Very Half Life 2 in good details.
The thing that really just pissed me off though was the obvious ripoff of the Max Payne flashback spook thing. The ghosts were very freaky to say the least so that was cool. My favorite part was climbing onto a ladder and as the animation sequence of the action finished there was the little girl standing right in front of you.
The problem was when I suddenly flipped into the "alternate" reality which was just lame. Seen that before and it was done much more effectively. I was freaked out a points in Max that just seemed sort of kitch in FEAR.
The gameplay itself was great, smashing windows and ducking and dodging the enemy was very intense, more so than even in Half Life 2. I just wish they hadn't gone there with the horror effects. That actually made the game less spooky.
I know I'm dead on the surface But I'm screaming underneath
So Max Payne is scary? Huh, had no idea. Anyway, FEAR has begun looking less and less appealing with time. I do think it's going to be an amazing game, but after playing it the first time it's far less scary. I started playing AVP again and knew everything that was gonna happen, and was still scared. The FEAR demo was boring the second time through, and maybe it's just me...
I'm pretty hard to scare when it comes to a movie. Games are no different, and only AVP2 has ever hit me so hard. Doom 3 was also lame second time through...
I should be ashamed of myself.
Ok, I will revise my opinion some of this game. I bought the full version and have realized that the Demo fell victim of the standard preview in that they tried to pack in a bunch of the most exciting parts in one short episode.
While I think the ghost angle is still a bit hokey, the battles make up for it. I even enjoyed a bit where the ghost girl comes marching down the hall and fire is exploding out of things she passes. I was so enjoying that bit of movie magic that I got burned up. lol
They also managed to use the ghost issue fairly well in that you get a lot of "out of the corner of your vision" sort of thing which does keep it spooky.
All in all, I give this one a 7 out of 10 so far which makes it very playable.
