Re: That time of the year (NAO Meeting)

Actually this would get a bit difficult, because: hey folks, it's MUNICH! It's a big city, you know? ;)

Actually I do know where Munich is :P It is where ahem the standard German par excellence is spoken! ;) Just kidding of course. It is where there is that nice bayerisch dialect that I don't understand at all (as if I understood standard German!).

One of my friends has just moved there after he graduated, and right now it seems that he has some problems in understanding the local people, because they speak so weird (he is, like me, used to standard German).

Anyway, back to the topic... I am not sure I would be so good with maps and things like that, and I am afraid that without any help on how to get there I would get lost easily. Of course my dad could teach me the way there, since he's been there so many times, but normally I don't understand a thing about his strange way to explain maps to me. So everytime we end up with him asking me "have you understood?" and me saying "yes, dad. I'll get there without problems", and then when I am "close to there" I will start asking random people for directions :P

Plus, even assuming that I do get to Munich (obviously assuming we have the meeting there), then where is your house, and how would I get there? These are important questions, my dear friend. Do you know that I wouldn't be able to find the Ayers Rock not even if it were in front of me?

As if school German was used in real life - ha! Similar to Oxford English - you want to make jokes or what? ;)

Well, I probably couldnt jump around all through Munich and shoot some photos for you how to get to our yet-to-found flat, but I probably could create you some nice map and/or help you by using ViaMichelin.com ;)

But this only would happen if the meeting will be in January 2006, if not, there is no need talking or even thinking about holding the meeting in your yet-to-be-found flat anyway. ;)

Well, I am not talking about to school German. That's not really what is studied at the university. But in any case, our lectors come mainly from Berlin and Heidelberg (at least the ones I had), so they don't have a bayerisch accent. In any case, I don't think I would be able to speak in German any longer :P I am not used to it anymore :(

I would love to come, unfortunately, travel costs are prohibitive.

But I will be thinking about all of you and wishing I could be there.
Thanks for the invite.

Ha-ha, sweet! Just read all of this post. You never know, I just may come a-knockin'. In the meantime, the least we can do is try to come up with an alternate US site to gather too. I work at the HQ of a large hotel/motel chain so there is the possibility of getting really cheap rooms somewhere central.

Say the D.C. area or something? Let me know if anyone is interested and we could have a multi-continental symposium of drunks and poets! lol

Heh. Add about $150 for the train ticket from the airport to here :-P

*** Travel info if any of you overseas people actually plan to join ***

Here is a list of airports in Switzerland. If you get to choose the airport, try Zürich. It's close enough for me to pick you up by car there, albeit it doesn't offer as many intercontinental flights as Geneva or Basel.

US citizens can find more info here.

Re: That time of the year (NAO Meeting)

Ah, but then I get to try driving and hitch-hiking and such. lol

I found a flight for $338 to Geneva. The joke of it is that I would leave from Baltimore, Maryland and fly to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and then to Washington, DC and then to Geneva.

Price for just getting the plane from DC: $645

Somebody tell me how that makes any freaking sense. I can fly for 4 extra hours, using tons of jet fuel, plane snacks and all the various facilities at each airport and get the flight for half price.

I wonder if I can call them and make a deal that I'll buy that ticket and just meet the plane in DC. lol

Friendly Meeting Reminder

Just wanted to remind you people that we should agree on a plan soon. :-)
So... a happy 2006 to everybody, and what are your thoughts/feelings on the NAO meeting?

My plans have changed a lot, so: No NAO meeting at my site, sorry folks! ;)

But I'd be happy meeting you at the standard location ('Ze Sane Procedure As Evry Yeer Miss Sofie') :D
