MelMel *** has an idea...

Xmas is coming...

100% | 6

So, Xmas/Christmas is coming and i propose we get into the spirit of the event by running the first ever... (drum roll please)

NAO World Wide Kris Kringle!

what's that you say? Christmas is still ages away. well yes, that may be true, however once we decide if there's enough interest to go through with this people need to find gifts and posts them around the globe so that they're sure to arrive by Christmas.

I havent really thought through all the rules but i was thinking something along the lines of:

- Some kind of ranking limit (i dont want random people who havent contributed to the community having my address. no idea what this minimum should be, suggestions all?)
- all those involved must post pictures of their gifts.
- Someone needs to run the thing in terms of distributing names to buyers secretly (god bless email) so the surprise/not being able to demand stuff element stays. so i guess everyone who wants to be involved should email details to whoever wants to run this thing. someone who everyone trusts with their details, if there are no volunteers i'm happy to do it.
- some kind of amount range to spend. and yes we all have different currencies, but we all have access to currency converters so end discussion ;)
- you cannot disclose who you are buying for.

that's about it in my mind, but are people interested in spreading some love across the globe? Share your thoughts!

Sounds like a good idea. Reminds me of the 'secret santa' things offices and school parties do. We could have the event coordinator drop the names of everone that wants to participate into a hat or something and randomly draw who's gonna shop for who. That way, everyone who wants in on the idea is more or less guaranteed to be included in the gift giving experiance.

As for rank limit, I suppose anyone that's been active for the past year and has at least one orange star should be eligable. That way new NAOees that might not have had many posts, but are still community involved will be able to participate and older somewhat trollish NAOees are still open to involvement, too.

I'm not 100% sure what you mean, but I dig the general idea. I think I'll participate, and would like to offer a helping hand in coordinating everything (or maybe writing a mini-website that does everything automatically). The "put all addresses into a virtual hat and let people fish them out by random" approach sounds good to me. If many people with privacy concerns participate, we could add a rule that real-life addresses are only given to people on one's NAO friends list.

How can you not like promite. For shame. You until i send you some Aussie literature, then you'll true pain. i nkow i'm generalising, but i've come to the conclusion that no australian author should be published. ever.

Oh well, akubras, Fosters, and kangaroos for all!

How about we send pictures of things to people as gifts? It'll be cheaper and we won't have to deal with the currency or mail.

...But even if we decide to use real gifts, count me in.

Kudos to null and the random number-out-of-hat website.

Lol, no... not that please! Have a little decency :P Otherwise I will have to send Nutella back to everybody ;) Seems incredible: they make that thing in collectible glasses even!

I know it's like spitting in the plate where I ate, but I did like that stuff when I was 5 or 6. Now I think it is disgusting. Oh and, be careful... don't provoke me, or I could send over also the tiny chocolate eggs with surprise

Heh have fun!

You Aussies should make that song your national anthem. At least there'd be a chance that people get past the first two verses.

That, or the Vegemite song :-)

Why why why? Why does Italy exports such crappy things, and there are the people of other countries who say how they love them, when we - The Italians - HATE them?! If you knew the crap they use to make those things... beginning with powder of hazelnut's skin, plus lots and lots of preservatives. Blah

The cool thing is, we used to get 'em Nutella glasses fresh from the QA laboratory, so we know the contents of that particular jar are okay according to the very stringent Swiss food laws. Plus there's the added coolness bonus of being able to serve breakfast stuff with Microbiology laboratory stickers on it - what more could one ask for??

That is so cool, Bernie! I have just added myself to the list. I only have a question, which is in fact the same I put in the "remarks" box, which is the following:

Ahem I am guessing that I have a question... how do we know if we're supposed to send a "female" or "male" present? I guess we should just pick neutral gifts?

Do you think it would be possible know at least the sex of the person, or nothing at all? It would just be nicer if we knew it, in case we were thinking about sending a more female or more male present.

Do you think it would be possible know at least the sex of the person,

Well, yes. :-) I'm planning of adding that piece of information to the addresses before they are distributed. The question is not on the form because the information can easily be extracted from the NAO user profile.

Re: Your turn, people!

I see... so basically what we are getting when everything is set out to go would be a real name, and an address? If that were so though (and I assume it's like that, because otherwise there would be no way to send the package) there could be some conflict of interest :P

I mean, if for example, I get a Bernie bla bla I would know that it is a package for you!! :P I mean, on the Nao most of us know each other, if not actually physically like you, me, Tammy and all the other Naoiies who met each other last year, we would at least know more or less each other's real names. So I don't know how this would be a "surprise" package as in I don't know who I am sending this thing to.

Then you could say that afterall it's not important if you know who you're sending it to, but that it's more important that the receiver doesn't know who sent it to him. Though, that would be easily guessable too :P I think I am the only Naoiie from Italy for example, and those in America come all from different states. Here it is mandatory to write the sender's name on packages, other than the receiver's. I don't know about other countries...

Anyway, not to spoil the fun people. I was just being realist, but I am sure that even though we know who we are sending/receive the package to/from, it will be definitely cool. At least it will be a surprise until we finally open it (that would be a first for me, since I normally know what's inside my gifts, aside from Hawkeye's because he uses reverse psychology on me!)

So I don't know how this would be a "surprise" package as in I don't know who I am sending this thing to.

And it probably isn't. But you still don't know where the packet with your name on it comes from.

I've even thought of increasing the randomness of the whole thing by giving everybody two addresses - one to send their packet to, and another one to forward the packet they get. That way, even if you know who's behind the addresses you get, you can neither tell where your packet goes nor where the packet for you comes from.
The obvious downsides of this idea are a) everybody pays twice the postage, and b) the packets might not make it in time.
