Hey, I was just wondering if anyone has heard of the Pixies. It's a cool band from about 12-17 years ago. I like most of their stuff, but nobody I ever ask has heard of them (Beh, even older people), and it's annoying because all of their music is really good.
Anyway, I was just curious to see if me and my friends were the only ones who had heard of and/or liked the band.

Well, my taste in music is rather varied. Sometimes I like all songs of a bang (Or all that I've heard, such as the Pixies) and sometimes I only like single songs. I'll try to give a general idea, though. Hardcore Rock, such as From Zero, I usually like. I am not one for deathmetal though. Most Grunge also sits well with me. Some of No Doubt's songs are okay, but some of them really annoy me. I cannot stand any form of country whatsover, and will not tolerate it more than the time it takes to change the station/remove the cd/kill the singer. I like a few Pink songs, A few Smash Mouth, most of System of a Down's songs, Linken Park, Ozzy Osborne, and Gorillaz.
I also enjoy listening to classical, although I don't get to very often. Various forms of Techno, some Rave, and some Anime-type music also seem to suit me.
Really, there is no way to easily classify what I listen to unless I sit down and go song-through-song listening ot them all. So basically I just drudged a simple post out much, much farther than I needed to. Beh, I tend to ramble on, in person and otherwise... Anyway... Sorry for the long drawn-out jumble, hope you get something out of this mess.

The Pixies rule! They inspired dozens of bands. Even Kurt Cobain admitted that he was influenced by them ('Gouge Away' supposedly inspired him to write 'Smells Like Teen Spirit').
My humble self has got their Best Of album (Death to the Pixies), and it's just great.

Check out the Aphex face. It's the coolest thing I've come across in a while. Take that one Aphex Twin track from windowlicker and use a spectograph program to plot the frequency over time using a logarithmic scale. Aphex's face appears! He encoded his own face into the song! There are some other patterns to be found on Windowlicker as well.
You can actually reproduce this at home. Go ahead and try it.
I wouldn't recommend Aphex Twin to anyone who isn't very open towards an alternate style of music and isn't willing to devote some time to closely listen what's going on in their speakers. This ain't Britney Spears, and it's no music to be played in the background.

Yep, seriously. You can download the spectograph tool for free at the site I mentioned above. A short snippet of the Windowlicker track can also be downloaded on the net somewhere (don't download a MP3 though, the broad frequency scale necessary for this trick is sure being gulped by the sucky MP3 compression). I could also mail it to you.
On the page it says that there was a tool for the Macintosh that basically converts an graphic image into sound. Wish I could try that out, although it's probably not very healthy for your speakers. That part from Windowlicker also sounds very sick and speaker tormenting - but hey, it's Aphex after all so who would get puzzled about that :)

Try Coagula, it works just fine. My $15 speakers seem to have survived my experiments, so you should be safe. :-)

Aphex naturally seems very random in nature in their music. I'm curious as to know if there are any other songs similar to windowlicker and the face within. Has anybody heard popcorn? I like that song too. Really does make you think of popcorn. Ghost in the Shell. Ah, they are all good.
Squarepusher has similar music. A1 by Squarepusher sounds a bit like megaman music towards the middle. :)

i am goth. i HAVE TO know the pixies :D
"i am so goth, i HAVE TO KNOW the pixies" *lol*
i also know many other bands, like: siouxsie and the banshees, joy division, velvet underground (which actually IS the father/initializer of nearly all after-coming bands, AFAIK also the pixies ;)), david bowie, kraftwerk, the cure, ... and many more :D
i personally prefer everything post-punk, deathrock + dark/new wave, eg. Der Fluch, London After Midnight, Cinema Strange, etc.

Seems like you always miss something.
I know just a few of the bands you mentioned and i am sure the others are good as well but not very well-known except with the scene so, I don't know them.
I have been to three Open Airs this summer and always found myself being astounded of the music of a band I first heard of that day. There were so many good bands, I just can't remember who was how and all the things and I could never buy all the records of this really good but totally unfamous bands.
And I don't belong to a typical music sector, I'm just listening very querbeet :-)

I think pavement is more of an acquired taste than the pixies. There are a lot of people that love the pixies that can't stand pavement. You should download a few pavement songs before you buy anything if your into the pixies but have never heard pavement.
Speaking of pavement, SM's new album is much better than the last one. I highly recommend it to any pavement fans.
For those that don't know, SM was the lead singer for pavement.

As a matter of fact when i read this post i was listening to the song 'all over the world'.they are fricken awesome! they go hand and hand with the band 'the breeders' because their basist is the lead singer in that band. She's Great..so much talent, if someone hasent heard of them, i strongly suggest doing so because you don't know what you are missing.
Excelent bands.
