A completely different breed: Thief 1/2/3

I've played nearly every type of PC game under the sun since the late 80's. Perhaps its just me, but the Thief series feels like a completely different breed. If one word could describe Thief, its intense. I firmly believe Thief is unparalleled in gameplay.
After playing for a few hours I found myself, for the first time ever, mentally and emotionally exhausted.. from a video game. For those who haven't played it. Do. Splinter cell is similar, but it doesn't come close.

My only question is, why can't the industry get it right like this more often? After yawning through Doom3, GTA:SA, they did nothing for me like this. Even with the crap software rendered graphics of Thief 1, the AI and gameplay was still better then any new FPS I've played in the past uhm, 5 years?

Thoughts?

I've never played Thief 1 or 2 or 3 so I can't really comment on how intense they are. I always found the Silent Hill games to be very gripping. The original Silent Hill was the first game to really "scare" me, make me jumpy.

I hear a lot about this lately, A.I in games. Especially FPS. Sure I like to be challenged in a game but really when it comes down to it I don't think A.I in a FPS is all that important. Remember the old days. It was all about quantity not quality. The enemies didn't have to be smart, they just had to be hard to kill or come at you in hordes...ahhh when games were fun. Some games it matters, like a stategically smart enemies in a RTS would be nice, but FPS's...

A non related point, I got my hands on just about every NES game made, through the use of an emulator. Before I got this I could remember about 10-12 great NES games.. well after getting this emulator and ROMS and testing out all (ok a bunch of) games I realized I had played pretty much all the good ones. For every good NES game I remember playing there are 10 bad ones.

Contra is fun though.... nothing but stupid guys with guns coming at you.

Hrm... I play mostly esports games. You know, games like Unreal Tournament 2004 and Quake 3 and 4. Of course the occasional peice of digital insanity finds it's way onto my PC (Postal 2, strongly reccomended by our very own null, and so much fun), but for the most part, I'm a fragger...

I did own thief 3, but it didn't play nicely with my keyboard (what's crazy is, it's a gaming keyboard!)... Iono. The keyboard works right in linux... but bugs out in doze. Psh.

I should be ashamed of myself.
