Actually, at least in my neck of the woods, you can get green gnocchi which are coloured using spinach (similar to those 'tricolore' pasta packs they sell). He might have encountered those.
By now I think you should know that to hear such things makes me shiver :P Hey, you're speaking to an Italian here! Flavored pasta yuuuck! I tried the tricolore pasta once, and I didn't like it :D I prefer to make my own sauces, instead of buying pasta additionally flavored heh. I am just picky I guess.

So...? They taste okay!
You bet they do. Whats wrong with a little color and taste?
The spinach isn't there for the taste but for the colour, you know. (Who would want to eat spinach-flavoured pasta anyway??)
Hmm. Is it really? I dont want color without taste. Pointless I say. And I love spinach flovored stuff, especially pasta. The gnocchi I'm use to getting is flavored as such just enough not to overpower but add a unique blend/taste with the patato filling.
Maybe thats odd, but I enjoy it.

Now are ye undeceived! Welcome, again, my children, to the communion of your race!
My mother claims it is a Czech meal call Halushky ( I could e mis spelling it)
Ask your mother how it spelled correctly, then I could ask my beloved one who is originally from Ukraine - they have several cooking receipts that are from there (Russia / Ex-UDSSR), eg. the Piroggé, which basically is some kind of caserole, made out of dough and filled with meat and sauce (yummi!).
Does your family origin from Czechia or is it just that your mother found that receipt somewhere stating it was from there?

My Great Grandmother on my mothers side (my mother's mother's mother) was from Czechoslovakia directly. I don't know when she came to the United States, however she was very old when she died and I had the pleasure of knowing her for 10 years before she past.
