Kooky idea.

So, i have a kooky idea. 'how new and exciting' you all reply. well, ok, fair enough, but hear me out first ok! Ahem...

I had a brainwave around 45 seconds ago. A great NAO music project. I'm still fuzzy on how to pull it off, but I think it would be absolutly amazing if possible.

my suggestion is this: The NAO Band. And yes, i'm aware of our issues in that we all live in different countries. so this is my basic suggestion. all of those musically inclined respond with their instrument and preferred genre. we then nominate a song. once the song is established, we sort out band members, and most importantly a tempo. then it's all happening. someone from the rhythm section starts it off and we then send the music aound the world adding to it. as this process might/will make the sound wuality worse and worse, perhaps it might be better to send all the parts to someone to compile as we go. i'm willing to do this using logic and soundforge.

so come on you crazy musos, what do you think? it'll be tough, but amazing if we can pull it off, imagine the NAO album... Our title track can be Flight of the Giant Flying Dildo...

So to get the ball rolling, I can play flute should people suggest songs that may require it (it's theoretically possible...) and I sing. My preferred singing styles are pop/rock ballads and all types of jazz, though my voice is pretty versatile.

as for song choice, my vote is to start off with something 'classic' that many people know, and something quite simple.

if you're musically inclined and have access to a microphone sing out, or strum, or hit, or toot, or whatever it is you do... if you're not well throw around some song ideas.

I'm totally unmusical, but I love the idea!

null throws in his two cents...

Re: Kooky idea.

Seeing that not much has happened while I've been away, I'd like to join the project (and bring it back to the attention of you lazy bunch ;-) ). Given my highly unmusical but geeky nature, I would like to offer storage space on a hi-speed server with FTP/Web access and (if needed) nightly automated audio encoding/decoding.

As for the song, what about Bob Dylan's "The Man in Me"? It could be played with a piano, background choir, some kind of flute and just a hint of drums. All that's missing is a very stoned male voice :-)

Yay for Null: uber-geek of the year!

I was hoping to get some more instruments from people out there... i mean, i can arrange to have my brother play whatever else we need on a very decent sounding synth, but that kind of ruins the whole NAOness of the project...

So come on y'all, there's gotta be more musos out there!

Also, with song suggestions, please don't feel the need to choose something with flute in it, i am quite happy to sing in various capacities, and will not throw a hissy fit if am put on backing vocals :P i do harmonies quite well

if ye be musical, send us a reply...

cyborg *** has a suggestion...

Re: Kooky idea.

I've worked on music collaboration projects before in the mod scene. (Mods for those of you being unfamiliar being a type of music format that combines sound samples and note information that hails from the Amiga demoscene years).

This sounds like quite an interesting idea. I've been looking to get back into doing some music as I haven't done anything for sometime.

Hence as far as composition/production goes I'd be interested. i could probably also work on some lyrics.

Now what I would suggest we need is some sort of organised collaboration centre to help collect files and such together. Basically just a shared folder over the net.

I cant play any instrument expect my voice. Gonna do some new voice samples right after writing this post. ;)

Maybe I can do some bongo drumming. Since I moved here I've been enjoying doing the rhythm section very much - which I never suspected I ever would 8)

'Kooky idea'... MelMel... Music forum... I knew it would be good. :)

I like it and I'd be willing to put a piece in. Guitar. Or bass. I can also create arrangements, figure out parts, etc.

As far as the technical aspect (putting junk together over the net), my preferred option is that someone else sorts it out, and tells me where to send stuff in what format. ;p

Now I'm going to skip ahead to song suggestions, because I can't help myself.

Flute, eh? 'A Passion Play', by Jethro Tull! jk, that's completely impossible. 'The Lonely Shepherd', Zamfir; also great, much less impossible. :p But seriously, 'Going Up The Country', Canned Heat. Great song, simple, and it has flute. And the singing is not gender-specific. :) Also, it maintains a strict tempo throughout; very useful for this purpose.
