NAO Outage

So NAO has been down for almost a day. Sorry folks. A drive on the server died last night, and after some hours of joyful disk reviving I've concluded that I've lost quite a bit of data... including NAO's database.
The good news is that the daily backups actually work :-) so as far as it concerns NAO, the data loss is minimal. Right now the site has been restored to the state of yesterday, September 19, 05:00 UTC.
Please let me know if you run into any problems.

Some times we don't realize the importance of taking back-ups. I hosted around 10 websites at a particular location and they used to take daily back-ups. So, I trusted them completely, and never took my own backup ever. One fine day, someone hacked their computer, and completely wiped off all accounts on their server.

I not only lost 5 years of work, but lost valuable data for all 10 websites that I hosted their. I lost the valuable list of all customers that I had dealt with in the last 5 years. That loss is irreplaceable. Since, I always believed that Dr2.Net's daily backups will replace my work - should I lose any, and I completely depended on them, it was quite a shock to discover that I had lost everything from the last 5 years just because I never thought of the need to take a backup of my own!

I hope my loss becomes someone else's inspiration. Folks, backups are priceless. Take them whenever you can!

Re: NAO Outage

I'm very sorry to hear about your loss. Yeah, I think we really don't attach enough importance to our digital data: when you think about it, so many valuable things - be they of 'real' or sentimental value - exist only in digital form... and we tend to take their safety for granted, when in fact they're all stored on devices that are bound to break some day.
In the current case I'm lucky as I've 'only' lost my MP3 and movies collection (of which I don't have a backup simply because I didn't have any space left for the backup of a 680GB partition). I can re-rip/re-download most of the stuff.
As for backups of your really important data - the question is not if you'll ever need them, but when. Folks, if you've got something really irreplaceable on your computer, make two copies of it and stash them in the safest place you can find. One day you'll be glad you bothered to do that.
