Reading Music

"Indie" music is a vague term. To help make sense of your concert-going experiences, here's a list of the potential signs that you are infact watching an Indie act.

1. The band has a violinist, or a cello, or both (or, for that matter, any mix of rock and "old school" instruments: aka guitar, bass guitar, drum set + french horn, bass viol, xylophone).

2. One or more band members are wearing scarves.

3. The band members all have their eyes closed while playing, and their heads nodded down slightly.

4. The band members could blend in easily with the audience. (alternatively, they could all be wearing matching white outfits)

5. You can stand in the middle of the crowd and not spill your drink. (note: don't bank on this, some brave people may be determined to break the mold and dance like there's no tomorrow)

6. The lead musician is named Sufjan (this may not be true on all continents, but I can only think of one person I know of with that name).

7. The audience is listening very attentively.

8. The audience is nodding their heads to the music, with a look of pleasant admiration on their face.

9. The band members switch/trade instruments between songs.

10. The whole of the band is greater than the value of its leader (there may in fact be no clear leader).

11. They play a song they wrote yesterday.

12. They describe their own music as "a back alley hand job."

13. They feature a Moog synthesizer.

14. One or more band members wear glasses while performing (not sunglasses, regular glasses, probably with trapezoidal plastic rims).

15. One or two songs have a disco beat.

16. One of the band members is clearly nervous about singing publicly, but he/she sings anyway, and the crowd loves it.

You're here, aren't you? You're talking to me, aren't you?

8. The audience is nodding their heads to the music, with a look of pleasant admiration on their face.

This is a bit exaggerated. Or maybe all music you can nod your head to is indie music? :>

"Life is a queue. You come in, hang around for a bit, get some service, then depart."

Some parts of this sound more like "you must be a fan of Death Metal Music" than anything else, including this head nodding-stereotype.
