Island in the Sea of Time

I'm not a big Sci-Fi reader, but since my brother gave me a trilogy he was completely ga-ga over I figured I'd give it a shot.

S.M. Stirling wrote this trilogy about the island of Nantucket getting tossed back in time by some strange unexplained anomoly to about 1250 B.C. The premise sounds hokey, but I promise it's pretty darn good.

Stirling did some amazing research on what the Nantucketers would have to aclimate to after being cut off from the modern world: where to get food, how people would react, sewage, power, what to sacrifice and what to keep, crime, government, etc.

He also did some detailed research on the climate of civilization and details of languages, trade, war, disease, and many other problems and benefits that could come from ancient peoples mixing with people possessing god-like technology.

The explanation of the geography and environment in ancient times is magnificent.

In some places the details get kind of heavy and they make the story a touch dry, but it's an exciting form of escapism and alternative history.

I give it a 4 out of 5

Re: Island in the Sea of Time

This series sounds facinating and I'm going to check it out.

I love sci-fi, but I can't ready just any old story.

If you're not into sci-fi, but at least read the triology suggest by your brother, then you may wish to check out "Battlefield Earth" by that one guy.

I've the hardcopy with a special forward by him. He guarantees he only wrote the book for his own amusement. I've listened to the audio tape, it's a really nice book. The narrator reads it in a wonderful way, too.

Thank you for the suggestion.

I love reading Russian Literature!!!

Re: Island in the Sea of Time

It's been a while since I posted about the S.M. Stirling trilogy, and I was wondering if you've had time to check it out...

If you have, what did you think?

I haven't picked up Battlefield Earth (L. Ron Hubbard) yet, but it is on my very looooong list of books that I want to read. I also want to read Dianetics and learn about Scientology, just to see what Mr. Hubbard was all about.

That's it, just checking in I guess, lol.

Good day, and Good Reading!
