NAO: Quality Offensive 2007

100% | 11

It's no secret that there's not much happening on NAO these days, even though plenty of users log in every day.

Thus I've come to the conclusion that you're a lazy bunch :-P

No, seriously. I, too, am not writing a lot these days. 1. because I don't have too much time to write, and 2. because I don't have a lot of ideas and there's not much other stuff to reply to.

Also, call me narcissistic (this word looks rather odd, but I've looked it up and Merriam-Webster's says it's the correct spelling) if you like, but when I do post something these days I get next to no feedback, a fact which I find rather discouraging because for all I know I might just be writing for myself, which frankly I would consider a complete waste of valuable time. I mean, I don't expect standing ovations for everything I spill on this site :-) but some kind of reaction would definitely be better than nothing at all.

Maybe some people have similar feelings, I don't really know.

Anyhow, I digress. Here's what I'm asking of you:

Rate!

It gives the post author a little feedback, readers in a hurry see what's worth their limited time and what's not, and everybody gets their cool stars back.

Write!

If you have an interesting thought, an interesting question or just an interesting computer problem, post it here for others to see. Your idea might just start an insightful discussion that results in the answer to life, the universe and everything.

Reply!

Add your thoughts to other people's posts. It doesn't have to be something new, the forums are full of stuff that ranges from mediocre to great.

Of course I know that that's not always as easy as it sounds. That's why I'm trying to bribe you just a little bit (hey, it worked last time):

  • The two users who write the highest-ranking posts during the course of the next two weeks will receive about 1/2 kg of Swiss chocolate.

  • The two users who rate the most posts during the course of the next two weeks will receive a slightly smaller (but still tasty) packet.
(Note that NAO is pretty good at detecting abusive rating behaviour. Usually the respective user's rating power is silently adjusted and that's it; if however you deal out random ratings to some random posts to get the chocolate you'll be disqualified, so please don't do that.)

Well, I could probably write some more stuff but that's basically it. Now go post & rate something, take care and enjoy your day!

Consider yourself hugged.

Thanks for the reminder. I already forgot about the whole post ranking. (Too much time away from nao, i guess).

Oh. Well, if that's a common thing it would explain a lot :-)

If we're all so busy - and we are - perhaps the lack of posting is a usability issue.

Consider how many clicks it takes to make a post from your first log in. Consider how many clicks it takes to reply from the login screen.

Perhaps we need some new features. A "create new post in (pull down forum list)" button. Or a list of top ten most recently commented on posts, both right at log on. Would that create a lot of server overhead?

Just a thought.

Please contiune to vote AND post.

*counts* 3 clicks? I suppose it depends on where you want to post.

I thought about some client-side application (say, a Windows program) that lets you read/write posts and send instant messages. But you probably know what happens when a big project coincides with a serious shortage of free time...

As for server overhead, the average CPU is below 1% and we've got some 300 Gigs of free disk space, so I don't think it'd be an issue.

I might be, but I don't know in what context you phrase the question. Then again, I might be getting over my head in this topic. Please excuse me if I am.

Cheers!

There are two reasons for my consistent absence on NAO: The one is time, the other is missing posts from my favourite users, missing posts at all and missing intelligent posts with burning topics.

Working slightly above 100 percent and training twice to three times a week plus absolving an italian language course, my private life is down to 0.5 at that moment in my life.

And well, i miss the insightfull and brilliant postings from users I got to know IRL like Andromacha, Jaz, Ettena, ginsterbusch, Martin, MrCrash and of course null. And it's not that there were other users who took that place.

That's just my two cents. Oh and rating needs time, too, which I don't have, see texting above.

Well, its just that I've got two blogs at hand, an own life and lots of stuff to do within the new company. So - time factor is the word, too. Missing time, actually.

Maybe after I've settled in a bit, I may return with good stuff again.
