New Startrek series, Enterprise

?% | 1

I finally overcame my weaker self and rented the pilot which has been sitting on the shelf for months. I don't know. It's been exciting to watch, but it just doesn't feel like Star Trek. Star Trek was all about federation technology kicking ass. Here they're like "Uhm captain, the steam engines are offline. We ran out of coal." Nah. I want force fields. Quantum torpedoes. I want a soft computer voice to yell gentle warnings when the warp core is about to blow up. I want a series celebrating the fictive future nobility of our rotten race. Not crewmen "trying to kick some major alien ass" or something.

I loved Roddenberry's optimism that we might someday make it after all.

Don't misunderstand me. It's probably one of the best series airing, and I'll of course watch it when free-TV starts to carry it sometime next year. Not only because there's no other Startrek fix around.

But, yeah, the soft rock theme has to go.

lol, I totally agree.

Star Trek: The next generation was all about the evolution of mankind in idealisms and moral dilemmas. In the future, there will be, supposedly, no currency. People work to benefit mankind, and, if anything, people get credits for leisure time (holodeck) but it is given with the understanding that it is for purely recreational use. In the end of every episode, Captain Picard or some other character in the show takes the logical, but most "human" course of action.

Q was probably the coolest character on the star trek series. The concept of this "god-like" race with no morals is an incredibly scary idea. Captain Picard when tested in situations by Q always does the right thing, even though Q is very amused by his actions.

The new enterprise is more focused on the mix between people as we know them now and star trek: the next generation. I don't know if I like it quite as much. I'm still trying to figure out how gravity works on those ships as well. They mention everything from holodecks to warp drives to tricorders, but never anything about how the heck they keep their feet on the ground in space.

They maybe overdid it a bit with Janeway.

lol

Look at a picture of an alien, and play a recording of Captain Janeway speaking.. Perfect match!

Watching voyeger, I just wait for the episode where she accidentally slips "take me to your leader" in the script somewhere.

For some reason, the show doesn't click like any of the others did. It's different from all the other shows, and I'm not quite sure how yet. It just doesn't feel like Star Trek.

Thats how it always feels when a new series starts! I've been with it from the early 70s with Kirk, Bones and Spock. When I first saw Riker and Picard a was rolling on the floor laughing and crying with tears at the same time, because it was so completely...different, bad, superficial and just not "the Enterprise Crew". But I, like millions of others, got used to it. DS9? Wow, it took me 3 repetitions to really get into it, but finally even got addicted to those guys and setup. Well, Janeway is different. I followed the series from the start, givin "her" a chance really, but was disappointed from each episode, especially the end. More like comic to me, not the true Startrek feeling.
I haven't seen any clips from the new one yet, but cant actually say I'm waiting for it, though, like Jaz said, I - we all - will see it just because there is nothing else sooner or later! ;-)

Re: New Startrek series, Enterprise

I think my problem is that I could never get into classic Startrek except for single episodes and the (mostly) wonderful movies. "My" Startrek has always been the next generation universe, with all the cool technology focus that comes with it. Going back to lewers and Spock's look-through-thing just makes me miss something. But I'll give it a chance. As you said, we don't have another chance.

I got used to Voyeger. It came on everyday at the same time and I found myself watching it everytime it came on (reruns probably). Anyway, there were two nerve-wracking conflicting "ideals" voyeger was getting at.

One was that though Voyeger was trying to get home, the idea was that the ship became home.

I wouldn't have a problem with that, except that another equally stressed idea was that Captain Janeway's neverending quest was to get the crew home (Earth) despite the fact that the crew already accepted that Voyeger was their home. It was like Janeway was the most commanding, most determined, most naive, and most dilluted crew member not seeing what the rest of the crew saw.

That and the fact that they had a Spock copycat (Tuvok) which spewed quotes by Spock himself ("The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few" stuff). Voyeger also lacked that comic relief character on the crew that was more funny than anything else.

For star trek: the next generation, this was Worf. Everybody made fun of his Klingon mentality. For Deep Space 9, it was Quark, the ever-so profit-loving Pharangian. He'd strike a deal with his mother to save her life. I guess you could argue that Neelix was the character for Voyeger, but he wasn't funny enough.
