His name is Nemo. As in 'Captain Nemo' or 'Finding Nemo' (decide for yourself ;)).

(Did it already destroy a piece of furniture and shit into the most expensive flower's pot?)

No, but he peed on our bed during the first night. Consequently we told him to stay outside of our bed. As he is still so small he yet cant reach the plant pots (there aint no blöödy flowers in our flat ;)).

I'll prefer 'Captain' over the clownfish if you're okay with that. :-)

Hahaha! No doubt he was marking his territory :-D

It is indeed the most cutsie awesome cat I have seen in a while :) He looks quite bright, and I am sure he will give you a lot of love and warmth. How old is he?

How old is he?

He's just about 11 weeks old. In human years he's about 2 or 3 years old - ergo an infant. And of course he's behaving like that.

Or to cite my beloved one: "der kleine blödschwamm ... " if he tries to do something kinda stupid. :)

Citing myself: "der kleine Rabauke wieder ..."

Re: New flatmate

Where did you get it? You know Hawkeye and I just got a kitten as well. We got her in a shelter (ENPA - the Italian national structure for the protection of animals). It was definitely an experience! It was just so overwhelming to see all those kittens there closed in a cage. I wish I could have granted a house to every one of them, but of course we had to take our pick... in the end I think that it was her who chose us, because it was the one who showed the most interest towards us when we got in the room.

What kind of food are you feeding Nemo? We're giving Luna food that is designed only for kittens, but this unfortunately means that she has to deal only with chicken and fish. I hope it won't be too boring for her.

Re: New flatmate

Where did you get it?

Directly from his mom - my beloved one had to pay a so-called "Schutzgebühr" (according to LEO.org: "protective charge"), but that was just that. The owner of his mom said she wanted to have her pregnant just once before sterilization, and her mom is breeding Kartäuser cats ... ;)

There were already 2 kittens gone, just Nemo and his little sister was left.

I dont know what you've got in Italy, but over here in good o'le Baden-Wurttemberg we've lots of different types of cat food. According to many people I know (and two other cats) Felix is one of the best ;)

Lucky chaps we are, cause Nemo eats anything, ie. is not fixed at some expensive cat food brand like Whiskas.

She's a cute one alright.
I like to feed my pets as much unprocessed food as possible. Then again, my (half) Jack Russell is a real hunter, and quite often I can feed her her own prey.
When I still had a cat I usually fed him meat intended for human consumption.

Are you ready for more of the same?

Re: New flatmate

Nemo is just awfully cute. I have taken some pictures of our Luna so that I can soon post them as well. Lately I found a forum about everything concerning cats and dogs, and I already joined... too bad that it is an all-Italian thing, otherwise I would have encouraged you to join it as well.

Luna seems to be wanting my constant attention. If I leave the room she is eating in, she will come after a few seconds to look for me meowing. Right now she is in fact sitting in a chair at the table right beside me, half awake half asleep. She is so cute!!

Ginster, I encourage you to feed Nemo products that are designed exclusively for him though. Felix should have a line for kittens as well as other brands. Here in Italy we have Almo, Hill's, Iams... these are the first that I can come up with. All of them have a kittens line. Generally speaking kittens should eat mainly chicken meat and fish. In particular, Luna seems to like a lot these:

Also, I have a question for you so that we can share our common experiences :P Do you manage to keep your apartment totally odour free? I mean, during the day I leave Luna's litter box outside, and still "her" room doesn't smell like roses. During the night I take it inside, because I don't want to let Luna free to wander on the balcony when Neil and I are asleep and she is unsupervised. How do you approach all this litter box problem?

Pictures of Luna

Here I am back. I just uploaded some pictures of Luna on flickr, so I will see if I can manage to get them here as well.

She was falling asleep in the kitchen right beside me earlier today, and I thought that I should have taken a picture, as she was so cute.

This one makes me laugh. As soon as she saw the camera, she looked up curiously in the most natural way. She must be a top-model in disguise :)

More pictures to come. Neil took a lot of pictures with the camera lately and I don't have any more space to take some others, so I will let him delete those he doesn't wanna keep, and then we'll take more pictures of our kitty :)

Well, thats your point of view. Other people would point out that cats should eat lots of different meals. Also, when we first gave food "Speziell für Katzenkinder" to him, he developed diarrhea.
He's already used to "normal" cat food, so why change that? Of course we give him some additional stuff like milk specially prepared for kittens etc., but really there aint no great difference between standard cat food and stuff "specially" prepared for kittens.

But what I'd like to try is to get him used to dry food ("Trockenfutter"), thus we could give him that during the day and a "wet" meal every morning and in the evening.

Do you manage to keep your apartment totally odour free? I mean, during the day I leave Luna's litter box outside, and still "her" room doesn't smell like roses. Nemo's litter box is located in the bath room - there wouldnt be any other space left for it, anyway. My beloved one suggested we could put it up in the floor, but that certainly would lead to stumbling over it all the time, so I discarded this idea.

Of course its sometimes smelly, but well - your odours might also be that, aint it? Just think about it when you hit the toilet and have eaten some rather 'strong' food which was spiced up with garlic and onions ;)

We change the bedding every 5 to 7 days, so it wont starting to smell too much. Also, we use coarse-grained litter, which tends to absorb smells and liquids rather easily.

I wouldnt move the litter box around, as it does disturb the cat heavily. Probably Nemo would pee on the floor where the litter box was located before if we moved it away at night. Well, we aint got a balcony, so its no choice, anyway :D

Cats heavily depend on their sense of smell, so they also have kind of a 'smell map' in their brain that tells them where to find eg. the litter box or their food place. Removing the litter box would be like permanently moving your toilet around the house!

Yes, I give Luna dry food as well every so often. Sometimes I mix it a little bit with wet food as well. Today I took her to the vet for a checkup, because she has a little bit of diarrhea, and he gave her a shot of a mild antibiotics (he also found a little bit of fever). Considering that we got her from a shelter, he said that it is normal... maybe she has some parasites in her bowels so I will have to *sigh* collect some poo and take it to be analyzed... so thrilling, ain't it? :)

well, we already had to collect his poo off the floor, so I know much more .. thrilling stuff to do - like emptying a full bucket of puke into the toilet and similar "tasteful" activities ;-)

Re: New flatmate

Fortunately for us Luna never pooed on the floor. However, the first day we took her home, she pooed on me and later on Neil (and it was diarrhea!)

One day we forgot to put the litter back inside and we went out to buy groceries, and when we got back... well Luna had pooed. But the smart cat didn't do it on the floor... I can't believe it, but she was smart enough to do it on some newspaper that was lying on the ground (we still had some things to trash from the moving and setting everything).

The other day we took her to the vet. She only has common worms, and we have already treated her. Well in the end she peed in the thingie that we use to carry her around. That is not really her fault though... we've been out for about 2 hours, and the poor cat had to release herself :) Fortunately I had put a rag in there, so it collected the liquid ;)

Tonight we went to see my parents who just came back from Austria, and we took Luna with us. We had her acquaintained with my parents' bathroom, so that she wouldn't be too excited to be in a new environment, and she has been the perfect kitten... didn't go crazy, used the bathroom only where she was supposed to... ate all her dinner. Neil and I were very pleased :)

I also thought of this - maybe taking Nemo with me to work sometimes so he isnt that lonely during the day. But then, he probably is still too small for this.

I think that the problem with that is that I don't think that you can leave Nemo wander around the office (I assume?), so you'd probably have to keep him in the cage you use to transport him, and then you'd have also to think about where to put the litter box (which would stink :P).

When we brought her over at my parents, she was scared at first. She hissed at my dad (but also because his way of petting her was a little rough), and it was hard even for me and Neil to keep her still in our laps. Finally we set her in one of my parents' bathrooms, and apparently she was fine in there (if you don't count that she jumped in the tub, and left her pawprints all over the place :P)

My aunt (who is kind of an expert of apartment cats - at the moment she has 2) suggested to acquaintain the kitten first with a room for a few days, and then to let her wander around (aside from the off-limits rooms, which in our case are the bedroom, and the livingroom if she's not supervised, because she already ate part of the only plant we have there :P) Well, we didn't really keep her in the one room long enough I think, so when we let her free to wander she was still a little overexcited/scared. A few days ago I put the grid on the balcony so that she cannot fall off, and I gave her access to it. Well at first she hissed at me if I got close to her there. Now it is all normal to her though.

So I don't know if taking your cat to your workplace would be a good idea, unless you want to keep him in a cage all day. If cats have enough food, water and toys they can use on their own, they are fine if they stay alone for 8 hours. You just have to give him extra attention and petting at night when you return :)
