Reading Linux

Hi all, I am new members of this forum. i have a question to ask all of you; now i start to use damn small linux but i can only run it on CD-ROM drive. can i install it on my hard drive like other OS ( RHEL4).

Of course. A short stroll around the DSL home page should have already revealed this to you (hint: take a look at the wiki pages) ;)

DSL includes a very interesting mechanism of hdd install: it creates a standard linux environment, but copies the cd-rom kernel itself to the hdd, so if you want to upgrade to a newer version of DSL you'd just have to replace this single ~50 MB file.

Of course the DSL scripts also enable you to do a complete standard linux installation, but wasting this nice option of fear-less and quick upgrade.

Ok, so how does this compare with doing the same operation, installing a cd-based linux OS, with other versions, such as Knoppix, or Mepis?

I tried doing Knoppix ver. 4.3 to the HD, and i still haven't gotten it to work right.

Damn Small Linux has some rather good optimization for this, also it still does use kernel 2.4 out of compatiblity issues and to be able to let it run on a way-old computers, like a 486DX66 w/ 16 MB RAM.

I never had any trouble installing it, although you should know a bit about partitioning your hard disk before doing so ;)

Another suggestion of mine: Give one of the Ubuntu or the Linux Mint distro a try. They're getting installed quite easily and there's a live-cd option integrated, too, so you're able to test the basic install before you truely set it up on your computer ;)
