I've just stumbled upon a plugin for Compiz Fusion (it's Beryl and Compiz merged together and will be the future of both projects) that outputs an anaglyphic image (the ones you see in 3D with those blue/red glasses).

yes you heard right: REAL 3D Desktop with the windows coming out of your screen! :-D

though it's still in production and not final as yet (still has some bugs and glitches), if you want to try it out you can find the source at: http://wodor.org/anaglyph/

hmmm. Surround Sound... check, Real 3D-Desktop... check, seems like I only need something to produce scents (i know it exists already ;) ), something to produce taste and touch/feel to have a perfect RealWorld™ setup ;)

Neat. If I were a real geek I'd so know how to build these and effectively use Linux!

I now got those neat horn-rimmer 3d glasses, they look similar to those:

but well, the Anaglyph-plugin really isn't completed as of yet, for example, the mouse cursor isn't 3D
so when I set the plugin to the highest depth, which means making it look as cool as possible, you either se the cursor sharp, with double-images of the rest, or the rest sharp, and 2 cursors, which makes it REEEAAALLLY difficult to hit buttons.

But, what the heck, the glasses make a nice gimmick for techno-parties ^^ My one goa-/minimal-listening friend was quite envious ;)

also, white/bright background images tend to make it look better, just in case you plan on using it.

Someone should implement a 3D desktop that uses 'head tracking' techniques:

The effect is quite convincing. Imagine being able to peek behind one window to see another by tilting your head.
