I have a friend who is currently in Berlin as part of his Travel & Tourism college course. He will be staying there until the end of April and has offered me lodging in exchange for the company of someone he knows in a strange place. I looked up some flights and it's only about $675 to get there (about 450 EUR).
So I may be staying in Berlin for two weeks sometime in April! My friend will be working 10:00-18:00 every weekday, so I will have some time to kill. I know there are a lot of NAOees living relatively close by. I would be willing to travel if anyone was interested in meeting. Drinks/dinner are on me! :)
The dates are not set yet, but I will update you as soon as I know. I am going to be busy spending the next month trying to learn German. ;)
If nothing else, does anyone have some words of wisdom for a traveler in that part of the world?
It certainly seems relatively close from the perspective of a guy living in Canada. If I wanted to travel west from Toronto and go to the next capital city it would be a journey or more than 2000 km with not much in between (except some Great Lakes).
Montreal and Quebec are interesting, but those are 8 and 12 hours away by bus. The idea that traveling for that amount of time could put me into any one of several different countries is very exciting to someone like me. An overnight train ride is a price I would happily pay for a little bit of adventure.
Well, thanks to Germanwings, Air Berlin and friends you can fly there and back in less than two hours for €110-150.
Only if you're a friend of flying. I'm rather not. Dont want my personal data spread all around the world. And most important: right now I dont have 200 euro of spare change (probably will not have for the next few months).
@mace: Anyway - come over here (Karlsruhe), enjoy some hours in the inofficial german capital of Goth with a (nearly) native guide :D

Naturally, I love Jesus very much. I love him so much that I'd like to crucify him all over again.

I would be honored. I hope there will be no dress code - I'm not sure I'll have anything appropriate. ;)
I just booked my flight. I arrive on April 12th and depart on the 22nd. My plans for the first weekend are to have my friend living in Berlin to show me around town. On the second weekend he wanted to drag me out to Amsterdam, but I don't know if that will actually happen.
So if it is at all possible I would love to meet any of you between the 14th and 18th. I realize it is during the week and people probably have to work. A weekend visit cannot be ruled out at this point, if that is all that could be managed. But I am perfectly willing to travel 6 hours for an evening drink or two if you're willing to have me. ;)
Just to be clear, I'm not asking for a place to stay or anything like that. My finances are fine & I wouldn't want to impose on anyone.

Well .. I wouldnt have insisted on that :D
My flat's big (~ 65 square metres), we've got both a couch and a guest bed - and I just'd have to convince my girlfriend to let a total stranger sleep here ;)

I'm located at the very eastern end of Switzerland, the closest airports are Friedrichshafen/FDH and Zürich/ZRH (both 60-90 car minutes from here). I really couldn't ask you to come all the way to my front door though, especially since I'm probably busy with work anyway, so this wouldn't be much fun for you. But the general area of Munich/Augsburg would be fine for me, there's a lot more going on there in terms of sightseeing/partying/beer tasting than at my place anyway.
Consider yourself hugged.

I'm possibly going to work together with a Munich-based company in the course of the next few months, so maybe I could too come to Munich - to show you all the "off-the-touri"-sites (and maybe invite some friends to join) ;)

visit to the Andechser.
would a short visit to the Augustiner do, too? :D
Anyway, there are at least two pubs I'd like to introduce you to:
1. The 'Flex' - a former punk-only pub, has turned now way more to the alternative corner, but still is worth a visit. Hope they havent changed the furniture yet - it's kinda antique, as in "legendary" :D
2. The 'Kings & Queens' - just about a walk of 10 minutes away from the above mentioned location, but more centered toward the punk, hardcore and metal crowd. Also smaller, but offering Augustiner from the keg ;)

Now that's a convincing argument if I've ever heard one. ;-)
I love the Augustiner!! I can find it even here in Itay in some particular stores where they sell only top quality stuff that you cannot find basically anywhere else. Maybe we could put up an import/export activity based on that beer? :P
Un bacio è un'apostrofo rosa scritto tra le parole "ti amo".
I am definitely looking forward to sampling the local brews. :)
well well .. I can promise you at least this: They wont be so watery as you probably are used to ;)
An average Augustiner Helles Vollbier contains about 5,2 % alcohol.

So my friend whom I will be staying with in Berlin booked some time off work because he wants to take me to Amsterdam. The problem is, I believe he booked off the 18th (the day we were potentially meeting in Munich).
So nothing is set in stone, but I want to check with you guys and see if maybe you'd be available to meet up in Munich the weekend before (12th & 13th). Of course, my schedule during most of the week is still open as well. :)
So far I haven't been able to get my passport because I lost my birth certificate last time I moved (it could be in one of about 15 boxes sitting in a storage locker, but I have had no luck finding it). So I've ordered a new birth certificate and it should be coming with plenty of time left to get my passport. I'm not worried yet, but I figured I'd mention it since there is a small chance I won't get it in time.
Well, I got my passport and everything is in order. I'll be taking off Friday. I figure if we don't have any solid plans yet, we probably won't get the chance to meet up this time around. Hopefully I will be able to visit that part of the world again sometime in the near future.
If anyone feels dead-set on meeting up, we can still try it, but I don't have a phone number for where I will be staying. You can get in touch with me here, or through email (mike dot cooney at gmail dot com).
I will take a bunch of pictures and will hopefully have some interesting stories to relate afterward. :)
Sorry, I haven't been able to get online since I got here. There is no internet connection where I've been staying. I am in an internet cafe right now.
I am leaving for Holland for the weekend tomorrow. I regret missing the opportunity to meet you guys, but I am sure I will be back again sometime in the future.
Berlin has been an eye-opening experience for me. Things here are very much different from home. Not being able to speak the local language is certainly an intimidating thing. I'll post some pictures as soon as I can get them on a computer with an internet connection (my laptop is acting only as a backup right now).
