Pulseaudio

Damn, i LOVE Pulseaudio.

Finally got surround working as intended.

before, i either had 5.1 sound but with 1 program blocking sound/no dmix, or stereo with dmixing.

Now i got pulseaudio running, it upmixes stereo automatically to 5.1 when it gets stereo, i can use it on my laptop to listen to sound, i can adjust global volume individually for each program and so on.

And the future of pa doesn't look so bad either, i mean, after all it strives to be for the ears what compiz is for the eyes.
For instance the "system bell sounds come from the direction they originate from" feature and so on.

only thing that sucks so far is that i have ti use a nightly build of vlc to work properly with pa.

What are your thoughts about pa? Have you tried it already, given that it's gonna be standard in the next ubuntu and that it's gonna be used by a lot of other distributions as well?

It's on a good way to become a standard. Just as udev and hal made it into a standard system layout pulseaudio also eventually will.

Because it makes things more intuitive and organised, providing an uniform layer over other sound subsystems (alsa,oss, whatever)

i esp. Like the feature of independent volume settings per each application.

What i don't like is that it locks soundcard for all other apps that are not pa-aware :/

Uhm basically there's wrappers for all those apps.

Like you can put

pcm.pulse {
	type pulse
}
ctl.pulse {
	type pulse
}

pcm.!default {
	type pulse
}
ctl.!default {
	type pulse
}

into you .asoundrc and then use alsa output normally in most alsa apps. Only vlc 0.8.6 isn't working this way (there's patches for pa to fix this), but vlc 0.9.0 is pa-compatible.

Cool, i'll give it another shot then.
