Jaz *** throws in his two cents...

Something stupid

Ratings (ugh!)

I hope you will all read this post to its end, because I definitely have to assign some portions of "guilt" to all participants in this debacle to make my point.

Hawkeye, your opinion that you (and, as I understand it, everyone else) deserve green votes for everything they write is very questionable in my eyes, and I can't blame the others for vehemently arguing against it. Not everything deserves green, because no one puts the same amount of effort into all their posts, and even equal effort wouldn't implicate equal quality.

There is only one reason to complain about ratings, which is when you are getting a lot of undeserved reds, which I don't see happening.

It's been said many times that as long as you're not getting any reds, you're scoring. All this math with percentages is stupid because the system doesn't work with percentages, but with a single score for each user. Yellow will make your score go up, green will make it climb some more.

The three buttons are Great, Decent and Abuse. I slightly adjusted the text of the rating buttons' quick tips (the box that you see while moving your mouse over it) and gave the neutral button a more greenish yellow to clarify something which I think is already widely understood.

I'm afraid I have to say that this is just how things have been chosen to be here, and the system seems to work very well so far. Other sites have other philosophies on rating, but mine includes a yellow button.

The fact that anyone is a perfectionist can't possibly be a reason for the system to change, or for people to switch their voting habbits to something they feel is wrong. I cannot vote differently, give posts ratings that I don't think they deserve, just to make sure not to insult anyone's perfectionist feelings.

The debacle

So we had a discussion, some minor plates were flying, and I don't see why people are making such a big deal out of it. We had much more serious issues in the past year, and no one ever threatened to leave for good.

Hawkeye, you're entitled to your differing opinion, you just can't expect others to adopt it. You accuse others of being blind for other positions, but on the other hand (please correct me on that) I don't know what would satisfy you short of everyone else agreeing with you. It's completely wrong that this topic was the first incidence ever of two users disagreeing. For instance in this topic I and Martin vehemently argued about something, and still neither of us felt insulted afterwards.

Think about it. Leaving the site is overreacting. Really.

Andromacha, you can't accuse the others of simply arguing against Hawkeye's opinion. They did explain it politely.

Adding to the fray is that we are all so terribly jaded of rating discussions.

Martin, with Hawkeye and Andromacha being romantically involved with each other your posts were obviously taken harsher than you intended. I think I know you good enough to understand that you don't want to "push someone out" of NAO. Maybe you should make it clear, for the sake of getting some perspective into this.

/me out.
