The search for NAO's day of birth

This is the earliest TCG mail I've found with the word "netalive" in it. My whole TCG collection, issues 250 to 1046, is available on demand. ;-)

I'm not trying to rock the boat but shouldn't this kind of mail be
posted under the announcements forum on netalive.org???? Keep the
mailing list for programming questions.

Unfortunately I haven't been able to dig up the original NAO announcement. Does somebody still have earlier issues of TCG (e.g. Weasel)?

Part 1: Birth of the domain

I spent some time browsing through my old files and found this:

To: Jaz
From: davidc@interspeed.net
Date: 16 Jun 98 02:11:32 -0200
Subject: Your account netalive.org has been setup!
Message-ID: <tcppop3.803021@BBS.cu-muc.de>

Hello Henning, this is and email confirmation that you account netalive.org
has been setup! A request has been sent to Internic and your domain should
be registered in a couple of days.

Part 2: Birth of the page!

While this was the technical birth of the Netalive.org domain, every real old-timer knows that Netalive.org was only used to host the Coder's Knowledge Base for some time.

So, ladies and gentlemen, here it is, the first e-mail ever announcing Netalive.org One Point Zero:

Date: Mon, 20 Jul 1998 18:33:04 +0200
From: Jaz <jaz@cu-muc.de>
Subject: Are you also missing the old Internet spirit?

HELLO HUMAN BEiNG

Can you imagine that there were times when the Internet
was a place where people came together to exchange ideas
and knowledge instead of money?

Where you could find answers, helping hands and friends
without getting spammed like mad?

Here we are, looking at the Internet how it is and how it
was.

Where have all the groups gone, that came together to turn
their binary dreams into reality?

Where are the crazy programmers trying to revolutionize
the software industry with their self-made programs?

And the people connecting their websites and mailboxes
together in large information networks?

Supporting creative people with great, novel or simply
crazy ideas, this is the task of NetAlive.Org ...

... because we want to prove that there are still people
out there whose ideas are worth being looked at closer ...

... and that pure communication opens far more Gates than
Bill ever will.

This is the introduction text to a new site on the web,
NetAlive.Org. All who are eager to learn more, launch up
your web-browser and go to http://www.netalive.org

bye,

Jaz

So Netalive.org's birthday is the 20th of July 1998! But hang on, I have more.

Part 3: Death of the page

Starting on 20/07/1998, Netalive.org went through quite a number of changes. But no cut was as radical as the years-long downtime that preluded the Netalive.org as we know it now. Here is the e-mail that officially announced that Netalive.org was fucked.

From: Keyser Soze <abuse@jumpline.com>
Date: Wed, 26 Apr 2000 13:39:57 -0500
Subject: Domain Suspended

Your domain; netalive.org has been suspended.
Your bandwidth usage of: 26641932875 bytes exceeds the limit of your
account by more than 10 gigs. This is in fault of the Acceptable Use
Policy.
We would like to invite you to switch to a dedicated server or seek
another webhosting solution.

Jumpline Abuse Team.

Don't you think it's cool to have your site dealing out 26,6 Terabytes of traffic. I suppose Amazon has half of that? I still remember receiving this ridiculous but fatal e-mail while I was at work.

I can't believe these dumbasses actually called themselves Keyser Soze in their "support" e-mails!! I just saw that film The Usual Suspects a couple of weeks ago. I just knew I had heard the name Keyser Soze before. Jumpline, I can't say how much I loathe you and your poor excuse for an ISP.

Part 4: Resurrection

Of course what we really want to know is: How old is the NAO that we know and love today? The oldest file of NAO's code dates back to March 2001. My estimate is that I began work on it in February, and was done sometime in March. But meeting Ettena, writing my final exams and having had so much fun at the army made me forget about the code and leave it lying on my hard disk for over half a year.

Here is the text document in which I saved the announcement of the new, current Netalive.org:

Hey!

Once more Netalive.org has relaunched in all new glory.
If you find the time, please come over...
and maybe bring a friend or two :)

see you when you get there,
Henning ('Jaz')

ps. I'm going to need some help during the first weeks
to get the discussions going, so please BE active, DO post
something, DON'T just lurk around and wait for something
to happen.

-----------------------------------------------------------
You are getting this e-mail because you once registered
an account on netalive.org

The date stamp on the file is 21st of October 2001! So we missed the birthday!

But hey, who knows? Maybe I prepared the announcement in advance, and only sent the e-mail two days later? Maybe today, on October the 23rd, one year ago? (Every smartass who now quotes an e-mail from their mailbox proving me otherwise will be prosecuted).

HEREBY I ENACT THE FOLLOWING DECREE: NETALIVE.ORG'S BIRTHDAY SHALL BE FIXED TO THE THENTY-THIRD OF OCTOBER IN THE YEAR 2001 A.D.

I have spoken - now celebrate!

Well, the Keyser Soze in the movie is the leader of a bunch of criminals, so it's not too unfitting after all. :-)

Well, IMHO you were right, so no need for violence. :-)
