Re: Ipod.

Why do people still like the iPod? It's become extremely expensive now, doesn't play WMA's, won't let you play with EAX, Dolby Surround, doesn;t connect via USB 1.1 or 2.0. Is 320 sterling for a 10Gb drive.

When you compare this to the Creative Jukebox Zen (www.nomadworld.com) you can see how far behind it is. For the same price you can get twice the capacity and compatibility.

d e s i g n. who cares about an ugly nomad ?
(it's the same reason why one would buy a porsche instead of some japanese car with similar features.)

  • i don't have any WMA's.

  • eax/dolby surround : i really need this to hear some music. (be honest: you would not even notice eax/dolby surround, would you?)

  • usb : my notebook has firewire ;>

  • who needs more than 10 gb ? currently my ipod is filled with 600 songs and it has free 5 gb left.

Re: Ipod.

But look at it, its smaller, infinately more stylish. Plus if its in your pocket or a carry case (with screen protector) who cares too much about what it loks like. I don't see iPods when people are listening to it.

V A L U E for M O N E Y why pay one price when you can get twice as much, use it as a digital radio and as a dictaphone?

i see it using it at home.
and it's not 'only' the design, it is also the great user interface - this wheel is absolutely outstanding, the menus are intuitive ..

seems we have different definitions of 'value' ;>

when i bought the ipod i did not think of the huge amount of money i would spend for some unecessary toy. i did not want a feature-bloated digital music player, i wanted something special, some great looking, cool toy. i wanted a real eye-candy with only one job: play mp3s. nothing more nothing less.

i am not interested in any other features a nomad could offer. (by the way .. how often are you in the need of the dictaphone feature of the nomad ?)

Just because you have it doesn't mean you should defend it!

Just look at the iPod. Look at what it comes with.

1. The carry case, it looks good, can clip onto your belt, but, my best friend uses his iPod all the time, the clip has broken off, the screen gets touched frequently when he takes it out, there is no window in the carry case and it doesn't give all around protection.
But look! There is a screen protector available, for 1 sterling per protector, or you could simply buy a Zen, whose carry case has a built in screen protector for free!

2. The software for the Windows version is not fully compatible with all versions of windows.
But look! With the Zen, you get three types of software, you can change playlists and edit details of each track on the move. You can transfer data without even fully linking via playcenter. Just a simple button tap and you are away.

i dont want to disturb your little 'Ipod, bad or not' mud fight, but:

some folks recently managed it to get (embedded) linux running on iPod. at this state of development, it does replace its functions of playing mp3, but they're working on getting other useful applications running on this system. :)

i wonder if linux would run on this nomad-thingie.
great - my favorite os on my favorite toy. this has to be heaven.
now i can come up with some serious multifunction-arguments for the ipod.
who is it now who got the most functionality ? a dictaphone ? ha! my ipod will run [insert your favorite daemons here] ..

Re: Just because you have it doesn't mean you should defend

Aha, Creative themselves have released the Linux drivers for Beta testing, soon the Zen shall defeat all.

Compatability? Ha, its just personal opinion now, pay the same for twice as much and more swish style for the zen? Or get ripped off by an iPod?

Hmmmmm....

Having linux drivers for something != Running linux on something :)

I know that, but these are 1st party, therefore it is a lot more reliable then drivers created by a user, or 'Running' on Linux.

Re: Just because you have it doesn't mean you should defend

It all really boils down to a matter of opinion. I first saw the ipod about a year and a half ago when it was released for imac. I thne swore i would get an mp3 player similar to it when one was released. I needed a lot of storage space, none of this 128MB rubbish we see on some models and a nice, sleek design. I was granted my wish when the ipod was released for windows. Although, yes, 320 is a hefty wallet-buster, i feel it is worth it. Very portable, modern, simple and very useful features. Frankly, i don't care about WMA format (to put it lightly :P), i do not like it, it's just microsoft's little finger in the music file scene. I do not need a USB connector as i have firewire, although a dictaphone would be useful, i'll admit. Having recieved my ipod back in september, it has served me well. The screen is prone to scratching, but anyone who cares about their possessions would make sure it isn't mishandled, so mine hasn't recived any scratches in the time i have had it. Although i have found problems with the remote and the clip breaking off with i was mildly disapointed with, to be fair.

Given the choice, i would still choose an ipod over a zen, though as i mentioned at the start of this topic, it is purely a matter of opinion.
