Vote: do you want to turn off the ratings in Journals?

?% | 1

hi folks,

what I just wanted to know from you: I dont like it getting rated in the journals - after all, it's very personal stuff you post there, and rating this just seems unfair. so either we deactivate the rating system, or we plainly outsource the Journals (like on a (sub)domain, eg. NAO-Journals.org, or similar).

so I want YOUR opinion (just to be a bit democratic): do you (also) want to let Jaz turn off the rating system in Journals ?

I don't think that we should stop being allowed to rate also our journals. In fact, our ratings are made first of all to defend ourselves from the crap that some brain dead might decide to come to post here. I am not talking about the Naoees who usually post something every week if not everyday. I am talking about the ones who maybe come here, ask for a question on stupid things or on their assignments (most of all computer science assignment, right RCD? ;) ).

We use to rate them red, right? Well, then what if they decided to start writing their own journal here on Nao? They might fill it up with crap, and if we didn't have the chance to rate them down, then only Jaz would be able to stop them.

It is true, on the other hand that journals are made to contain some more personal informations. The only thing I can tell about the ratings on journals, well the only idea in my mind is this

let's rate down the only ones we actually consider abusive posts, like we do in each other category. Let's not rate posts we read and found out weren't interesting to us, because they might be important to the ones who wrote them, since they are more personal stuff. On the other hand, let's rate nice or excellent the posts we really felt and liked.

Does my proposal make some sense to you all? Let me know if it is totally crazy, or if you agree with it at least in part :)

It must have been a year since the last red rating has been given out. The fuss is all about single mediocre ratings here and there, which is perfectly normal.

Re: Vote: do you want to turn off the ratings in Journals?

do you (also) want to let Jaz turn off the rating system in Journals ?

No.
For two reasons.

First: Ratings are an integral component of NAO. With all the ever returning discussions about it of how to understand it, or how to rate "correct", its still a useful tool to give a hint for everyone of what might be an interesting read or not (besides the a thousand times repeated well known intended function). Therefore permanently NOT rating is as useless as permanently rating "excellent". It just provides no information. And with the growing amount of posts it might be soon necessary (if not now already) to select by the ratings others had given before.

Second: And this is a prediction! If things go on as they're showing up right now, soon we wont need any topic forums no more, since everybody's just posting in their journals! :) I mean, look at what happened since Jaz introduced those journals (might be a task for RCD to provide the actual numbers for how many posts still have been written in the forums outside the journals ;) )! The journals are so popular meanwhile that we might as well completely resign ratings, if not allowed to rate journal post anymore.

Anyway, if you are afraid of bad ratings, just dont post that special piece. But why should you be in the first place?? Especially when its about any form of art, like poems or stories or personal expieriences. Why bother about what others think of it? If you feel, you have something to say, say it, that's what NAO is all about. If someone doesn't like it...well...that's how life goes, but it doesn't necessarily mean its bad, and not at all you should not have posted it! Its a matter of taste, and that IS different!

After all, I still support Frank's proposal to make ratings in-/visible on user's request as part of his personal settings.
And I repeat the proposal to just show the amount of ratings until more than three people voted a particular post.

I dont like it getting rated in the journals - after all, it's very personal stuff you post there, and rating this just seems unfair.

if what you post is that 'personal' do you really think the net is the right place to post it ? it will be rated as soon as someone reads it. maybe you won't see the ratings, because the person just thinks something like 'whoa .. this is such boring stuff, in future i will never ever read something written by this guy' or 'wow, this is crap, let's just email this guy or build a website making fun of his postings' but if you post something to the public you are always in danger to get 'in touch' with other people's opionions or ratings.

so there are two possibilities i have to offer:

  1. don't post into your nao journal
that's what i do because i don't i don't share anything what would go in a journal with the net :)

  2. ignore the ratings
if ratings hurt you that much you should just ignore them. otherwise refer to point 1.

We're here to entertain

100% | 5

Aside from all the other valid reasons that have thankfully been worded out by other participants:

Everyone of us has a very limited amount of time available to themselves. So why do we think do we keep investing bits of it into reading this site?

The answer is that we want to read something entertaining or interesting or funny, with a somewhat lower bar applying for contributions by very close friends. If something doesn't fit into any of these categories, what's the point of publishing it in the first place?

Taking your stuff somewhere else (for Frank: "to a personal webpage"), where you have no ratings, comments, etc. is an option of course, but then again no one will read it there. Posting something here equals exposure. This is because people come here to find something worth reading. Which is why ratings make sense and are going to stay.

Jaz are you somehow implying that all other online forum type websites are inferior to NAO? I find this school of thought extremely selfish.

I didn't write that, you did. What I said was that publishing your journal on a private website somewhere will take much longer to gain a steady readership.

Hmmm... I was on another similar forum like this, and I love the fact that I have a section which belongs to me here. I love the journal section! :) That is certainly different and appealing to me about here.

Re: Vote: do you want to turn off the ratings in Journals?

i think thats its extremely personal, however, in my journal if i get a good rating people think what i feel is true, however if i get a bad rating it could be because they have gone through something similar which turned out fine for them and haas slipped their memory as it was years ago that they were my age.

good ratings are nice, but io think the point of NAO is to express yourself, ratings shouldnt matter that much.

I understand what you mean when you 'talk' about the personal aspects written in journals. i think that instead of turning off the rating system, why not request that your more personal journals not be rated. then it is up to the rest of the users on NAO to respect your wishes. plus, some want their journals to be rated to turning the system off completly would be unfair, too.
