Movies with ending surprises?

94% | 2

I love it when a storyline is completely turned upside down in the last ten minutes of a movie, so you basically have to queue up (or hit play) again after it ends.

Do you have recommendations for me? I'm not looking for small plot twists in the end, I'm looking for endings that slap me in the face. Please reply if you know of any titles that fit this description. And no spoilers, please!

My list

Fight Club

Don't trust the cover blurb. This movie is huge.

Memento

Arguably the best movie ever done. Great ending. Beginning. Whatever.

The Sixth Sense

You'll have to fight sleep for the first 90 minutes, after which this movie will become immortal for you.

The Usual Suspects

What the director is doing with his viewers here violates a minimum of two rules from the Genava Convention.

Now hand over your list!

The Others. Definitely blows 6th Sense away.

Re: The others

It would have done that, if it had been first. But this way it seemed so like a 6th sense rip off!

To be honest - and that's just my opinion - I've found 6th Sense rather boring. Okay, there were 1 or 2 good scenes, but all in all it just didn't... hmmm, carry me away too much. And hey, you can't just compare 6th Sense and The Others! :-)

Movie to add

Wild things - maybe not the best movie but it changes several times till the surprising end :-)

Re: Movies with ending surprises?

My suggestions are Seven and Donnie Darko. Both have very good endings. I think the ending of Signs was perfect too, but a lot of people disagree.

I have to add one film: Dragonfly (Im Zeichen der Libelle).. It doesn't have such a great and surprising end like "the 6th sense" but it's really worth to watch it. I don't want say too much, but for everyone who likes films as the "6th sense" a good tip.

Every claims for damages by potential disappointed watchers can't be enforced aginst the author...

Re: Movies with ending surprises?

Seven, Unbreakable, Sixth Sense, Usual Suspects, and Primal Fear.

Seven remains at the top of my list, I have seen 'n' number of times, but I still love the ending! I find Unbreakable better then Sixth Sense, and feel that it is the best amongst the 3 movies that Shyamalan has given. It's concept and the ending are too good, though the movie lacks in other departments like a good script!

Re: Movies with ending surprises?

Maybe one should add the movies of Master Lynch (Mulholland Drive, Lost Highway,...).

In fact those movies don't just have a surprising end. The whole movies are just... strange and noone ever can tell what they're about really :-)

I have not seen Solaris, but I have heard that it too has a surprising ending. Can anyone who has seen Solaris comment on this?

Re: Movies with ending surprises?

Add The Game by David Fincher to your list...
I saw this movie yesterday, and it fully derserves the predicate "surprising twists in storyline and mind-boggling end".

Side note: I wouldn't necessarily buy it, rent it first if you can...

Re: Movies with ending surprises?

I loved " The Game" too. It had a wonderful script. Michael Douglas is wonderful (as usual). The movie is full of twists and turns, and the ending is unpredictable. I would recommend it too to everyone - worth watching at least twice!
